United States of the West
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The United States of the West is a political concept satirically advocated by Régis Debray. In his paper Empire 2.0 (Berkeley: North America, 2004), he urges the annexation of Europe by the United States of America as the only hope against the coming Islamist and (possibly) "Confucian" onslaught. In his paper he reasoned that only the United States can take responsibility, at a reasonable cost, for the peace and unity of the civilized world. He also asks if it would be easier under the rule of Islam or the domination of China if and when it becomes the world's only hyperpower. He believes that the United States should extend United States citizenship (through an Edict of Caracalla) to all Canadians, Mexicans, Europeans, Japanese, New Zealanders and Australians, and (possibly) those from the Caribbean.
Cullen Murphy in his book, Are We Rome? The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America, Tells of American Expansionists and their desire to bring America, particularly American culture, to the rest of the world, starting with Europe.
