The 2010 United States Senate election in Pennsylvania will take place on November 2, 2010.
Incumbent Senator Arlen Specter has announced that he plans to seek another term as Pennsylvania's Senior Senator in 2010. He has held the seat since 1980, and will be 80 years old in 2010. He reiterated his intent on April 16, 2008, but also revealed that his Hodgkin's disease had returned.[1]
Several intriguing challengers could emerge from the Democratic race. One would be Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. Another possibility that developed recently has been the idea that the host of MSNBC's Hardball, Chris Matthews, may be interested in challenging Spector for the seat. Matthews's contract with MSNBC expires in 2009.[2] Matthews said that it was his boyhood dream to be a Senator during an appearance on The Colbert Report in April, 2008.[3]
Pennsylvania tends to lean Democratic, having gone for Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004. However, Spector is rather popular, and maintains moderate views.
