Chuck Schumer, current Chairman of the DSCC, will seek a third term.[citation needed] In 2004, he handily defeated Assemblyman Howard Mills. New York is considered a Democratic stronghold. However, there are a few Republicans who could oppose Schumer, including former governor George Pataki, former New York City mayor and 2008 presidential hopeful Rudolph W. Giuliani, and State Senate Majority leader Joseph L. Bruno, with the former mayor and former governor being the strongest opponents for the incumbent.

Schumer is unlikely to face opposition in his party. It is possible Schumer could run for Governor in 2010 were David Paterson not to seek a full term that year, which could cause the Democrats to field another nominee for Senate.
