United States Senate election in Nevada, 1998

The 1998 Senate election was between incumbent Harry Reid and congressman John Ensign which Reid narrowly won by 428 votes.

[edit] Harry Reid

Reid was born on 1939 and had first been elected Lieutenant Governor with 54% of the vote in 1970. In 1974 he ran for Senator against Paul Laxalt but narrowly lost by 624 votes. In 1986 Reid was elected senator by 14,000 votes. In 1992 he narrowly won re-election by 53,000 votes.

Ensgin was born in 1958 and was first elected to something in 1994 when he won a seat in congress by 1,436 votes and was re-elected by 11,000 votes. He also served as a vet in Las Vegas.

The election started out with two ads Ensign aired. Polls on September 26th had it Reid 49% to 41%. In June Ensign aired an ad called the good guy ad which had Reid as a good person but that Ensgin and he disagreed on many issues. Then Reid aired a negative ad which made fun of Ensign's record. Then polls in October it was Reid 46% to 43%. The biggest issue was nuclear waste which Ensign had on an ad which put the polls at 45% to 45%. On November 3 1998 Reid won in a close election by 428 votes even closer than Tim Johnson run in 2002 when he narrowly defeated John Thune by 524 votes. Ensgin did not contest the results and Reid won the race. Newspapers said, " Reid defends Democratic Senate seat in Nevada".
