The United States Senate election of 1978 in Massachusetts was held on November 7, 1978 with the incumbent Republican Senator Edward Brooke being defeated by then Democratic Congressman Paul E. Tsongas.

• Senator Paul E. Tsongas - Two-term Congressman from Lowell's 5th Congressional District, retired in 1984 and was succeeded by John Kerry. Later ran for United States President in in 1992 but was forced to drop out due to health reasons.

• Edward Brooke- Incumbent Senator, and last Republican Senator from Massachusetts. Elected as Massachusetts Attorney General in 1962 and in 1964. First elected to the United States Senate in 1966 and re-elected in 1972 before his defeat in 1978. Subsequently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004.
