The 2002 race for Senate featured 3 candidates Democratic incumbent Dick Durbin Republican State Representitive Jim Durkin and Libertarian Steven Burgauer. On November 5 Dick Durbin easily defeated Jim Durkin 60% to 38%.

The Republican primary very competitive with Jim Durkin, James D. Oberweis and John H. Cox. Coming in first was Durkin with 45% coming in second was James D. Oberweis with 31% and coming in last was Cox with 22%.
