United States Naval Ship

United States Naval Ship or USNS is the prefix designation given to non-commissioned ship of the United States Navy. These are usually auxiliary support vessels that are in service, but are crewed by civilians (either as direct employees of the Department of the Navy, or as employees of a firm which contracts to the USN).

All USNS ships are under the command of the Military Sealift Command.

By comparison, warships are commissioned into service with the designation 'USS'. For examples refer to the List of ships of the United States Navy.
