The USA Cycling Professional Time Trial National Championship was held for the first time in 2006. The USPRO ITT was held as part of the dual championship with the Road Race in Greenville, S.C. on Labor Day weekend. This inaugural championship was open to any U.S. citizen on a UCI-registered trade team.
In the past, professional riders were included in the USCF Elite Men's National Time Trial Championship event. But since the professional aspect of the sport continues to grow in America, it became possible to feature a time trial for professional riders only similar to the structure of the road race.
