United States House of Representatives elections in Illinois, 2008

The 2008 congressional elections in Illinois will be held on November 4, 2008 to determine who will represent the state of Illinois in the United States House of Representatives. Illinois has nineteen seats in the House, apportioned according to the 2000 United States Census. Representatives are elected for two-year terms; those elected will serve in the 111th Congress from January 3, 2009 until January 3, 2011. The election coincides with the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

[edit] 1st District

Illinois's 1st congressional district includes part of Cook County, and has been represented by Democrat Bobby Rush since January 1993.

Illinois's 2nd congressional district includes parts of Cook and Will counties, and has been represented by Democrat Jesse Jackson, Jr. since December 1995.

Illinois's 3rd congressional district includes part of Cook County, and has been represented by Democrat Dan Lipinski since January 2005.

Illinois's 4th congressional district includes part of Cook County, and has been represented by Democrat Luis Gutierrez since January 1993.

Gutierrez announced he will seek re-election in 2008.[1] Earlier in 2007, Commissioner Roberto Maldonado, Ald. Manny Flores (1st Ward), Ricardo Munoz (22nd Ward), and George Cardenas had announced their intentions to run for the seat in 2008 as Gutierrez had been saying he planned to retire.

Illinois's 5th congressional district includes part of Cook County, and has been represented by Democrat Rahm Emanuel since January 2003.

Illinois's 6th congressional district includes parts of DuPage and Cook counties, and has been represented by Republican Peter Roskam since January 2007. His Democratic challenger is Jill Morgenthaler, an Iraq War veteran.

Illinois's 7th congressional district resides entirely within Cook County, and has been represented by Democrat Danny K. Davis since January 1997. His Republican challenger is Steve Miller, a US Navy and Operation Provide Comfort (1991) veteran.

Illinois's 8th congressional district includes parts of Lake, McHenry and Cook counties, and has been represented by Democrat Melissa Bean since January 2005. Her Republican challenger is Steve Greenberg.

Illinois's 9th congressional district includes all of Evanston, Skokie, Niles, Morton Grove, Park Ridge and Norridge, parts of Wilmette, Northfield, Glenview, Golf, Rosemont and Des Plaines, and much of the North Side of Chicago. It has been represented by Democrat Jan Schakowsky since January 1999.

Illinois's 10th congressional district includes parts of Lake and Cook counties, and has been represented by Republican Mark Kirk since January 2001. The Democratic challenger is Dan Seals, who also ran against Kirk in the 2006 election.

Illinois's 11th congressional district includes the towns of Joliet, Kankakee, LaSalle, Ottawa and Streator, and all or parts of Will, Kankakee, Grundy, LaSalle, Bureau, Woodford and McLean counties. An open seat, it's being contested by Democratic State Senate Majority Leader Debbie Halvorson, Green Party newcomer Jason Wallace, and Republican local businessman Martin Ozinga.

It has been represented by Republican Jerry Weller since January 1995, who announced he will not be seeking re-election. Timothy Baldermann, who is both New Lenox Mayor and Chicago Ridge Police Chief, won the GOP nomination but withdrew on February 23rd. [1] Martin Ozinga was then chosen to replace Balermann.[2].

Illinois's 12th congressional district is in the southwest part of the state and includes the cities of Alton, Carbondale and East St. Louis. It has been represented by Democrat Jerry Costello since August 1988. Chairman of the Metro East Green Party Rodger Jennings is also a candidate.

Illinois's 13th congressional district includes parts of the Cook, DuPage and Will counties, and has been represented by Republican Judy Biggert since January 1999. The Democratic challenger is Scott Harper.

Illinois's 14th congressional district includes the cities of Aurora, Elgin, DeKalb and Dixon, and parts of Henry, Whiteside, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, and DuPage counties. It has been represented by Democrat Bill Foster since March, 2008. The Republican challenger is Jim Oberweis, who lost to Foster in the special election.

The district was previously represented by former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert from 1987 to 2007. He resigned in November 2007, and Bill Foster won the special election held on March 8, 2008.

Illinois's 15th congressional district includes the cities of Charleston, Urbana, Danville and Champaign, and all or parts of Livingston, Iroquois, Ford, McLean, DeWitt, Champaign, Vermillion, Macon, Piatt, Douglas, Edgar, Moultrie, Coles, Cumberland, Clark, Crawford, Lawrence, Wabash, Edwards, White, Saline and Gallatin counties. It has been represented by Republican Timothy V. Johnson since January 2001. The Democratic challenger is Steve Cox.

Illinois's 16th congressional district includes the cities of Rockford, Crystal Lake, Machesney Park, Belvidere, Freeport and Galena, and all or parts of Jo Daviess,Stephenson, Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Carroll, Ogle, DeKalb and Whiteside counties. It has been represented by Republican Donald A. Manzullo since 1993. Robert G. Abboud is the Democratic challenger.

Illinois's 17th congressional district includes the cities of Sterling, Rock Island, Moline, Kewanee, Galesburg, Canton, Macomb, Quincy, Springfield and Decatur, and includes all or parts of Henry, Whiteside, Rock Island, Mercer, Knox, Warren, Henderson, Fulton, McDonough, Hancock, Adams, Pike, Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Madison, Montgomery, Christian, Sangamon, Macon, Shelby, and Fayette counties. It has been represented by Democrat Phil Hare since January 2007. Troy Dennis of Mt. Zion is the Green Party challenger.

Illinois's 18th congressional district in the central and western part of the state includes the cities of Jacksonville, Peoria and Springfield, and has been represented by Republican Ray LaHood since 1995. As LaHood is retiring, the Republican nominee is Aaron Schock and the Democratic challenger is Colleen Callahan.

Illinois's 19th congressional district in the central part of Southern Illinois includes part of Springfield and the outer St. Louis suburbs. It has been represented by Republican John Shimkus since 1997. The Democratic challenger is Daniel Davis.
