United States House of Representatives elections, 1840
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The U.S. House election, 1840 was an election for the United States House of Representatives in 1840.
The 1840 election gave the Whig Party control of the House of Representatives for the first time. An economic collapse and its perceived mishandling by President Martin Van Buren, gave the Whigs the presidency (William Henry Harrison was elected) and a majority in the House. The Whigs also benefited from the disbanding of the Anti-Masonic Party, nearly all of whom's former members aligned with the Whigs.
