United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 1992

Following the diappointing tenth place of Samantha Janus in the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest, the BBC announced that they would be reviewing the national selection contest. In December 1991 it was announced that West End star Michael Ball would be representing the UK and that songs could be entered for him to sing in the UK final.

Michael Ball performed eight songs in A Song for Europe staged in London on April 3rd. Terry Wogan was once again the host.

The opening song of the night was "This is the moment", composed by contest veteran Paul Curtis. This middle of the road ballad was a last minute replacement for "Walking on the moon (without you)". 73,084 votes, 5th

"Call on me" was another middling offering, penned by Ian Allen and Dave Keats. 48,419 votes, 7th

Former Eurovision winner Andy Hill (he wrote Bucks Fizz' winning entry in 1981) ws responsible for a powerful ballad called "As dreams go by". 94,844, 2nd

"Secret of love" was a more uptempo song, also by Ian Allen and Dave Keats. 91,705 votes, 3rd

Karen Boddington and Robin Smith wrote the downbeat and dramatic "Every day, every night". 32,007 votes, 8th

"Who needs to know" was the sixth song of the night, another mid-tempo entry, this time written by Ronnie Bond. 52,126 votes, 6th

The most identifiable entry of the night was "One step out of time", an uptempo and somewhat 'typical' Eurovision song. Composer of the song were Paul Davies, Tony Ryan and Victor Stratton. 153,792 votes, 1st

The final entry of the evening was the ballad If you need another love composed by 1990 finalist John Miles. 88,476 votes, 4th

The UK entered "One Step Out of Time", performed by Michael Ball, for the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest. It received 139 points and 2nd place in Malmö, Sweden. Among Michael's backing singers were former A Song for Europe finalist Peter Beckett and former Modern Romance lead vocalist Michael Mullins.
