United Democratic Forces of Belarus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The United Democratic Forces of Belarus is a coalition of political parties participating as the main opposition group during the 2006 presidential election. The group chose Alaksandar Milinkievič as their candidate to see if he could defeat the incumbent Alexander Lukashenko, the authoritarian president since 1994.

He won 6.0% of the vote by the official data. However Belarus opposition and Western countries have not accepted the official results because they believe that elections were rigged. Only Belarus authorities and Russia believe that the elections were fair.
