The United Church Observer is an independent Canadian Christian newspaper that was first founded in 1829 as a weekly Methodist newspaper The Christian Guardian, with Egerton Ryerson as the editor.
It is currently a monthly publication, except for each year's combined July/August issue.
[edit] History
Following the merger of the founding Methodist denomination with other Methodist denominations to form the Methodist Church of Canada, and the merger of that church with other Protestant churches to form the United Church of Canada, the paper was merged with The Banner of the Presbyterian Church in Canada and the publication of the Congregational Union of Ontario and Quebec to form a publication known as The New Outlook. In 1939, the publication was renamed to its current name.
It has been independently incorporated since 1986, setting its own editorial policies, and not an official publication of the United Church of Canada.
