Unite (trade union)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unite – the Union, known as Unite, is a British and Irish trade union, formed on 1 May 2007, by the merger of Amicus and the Transport and General Workers' Union. As part of the merger process, a Joint Executive Council (formed of the executives of both the predecessor unions) took office on the vesting day. Unite will be led jointly by Derek Simpson (General Secretary of Amicus) and Tony Woodley (General Secretary of the T&G) for three years until Simpson's retirement.[1]
In March 2008, a new Executive Council for the expanded Union will be elected, taking office on 1st May for the following three years. The Executive Council will put a new rulebook to a ballot of members during 2008. There will be no facility to amend this until a Rules Conference is held.
