Union of UEA Students

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Union of UEA Students is the students' union of the University of East Anglia. All students of the university automatically become members of the Union unless they choose to opt out. The Union is a democratic organisation run by its members via an elected executive committee and student council. It is affiliated to the National Union of Students.

[edit] Union Council

The Union Council, whose members are elected student representatives from each school of the university and the clubs and societies of the Union, in addition to the executive committee, meets a minimum of eight times a year and sets the policy of the Union and confirms the actions of the executive committee. The decisions of the Union Council may only be overturned by a ballot of all members of the Union.

[edit] Policy ballots

The decisions of the Union council may only be overturned by a ballot of all members of the Union. A policy ballot may be called by the Executive, Union Council or by 500 members (1/30 of the membership). The question is balanced and every student may vote. A straightforward majority will win and set new policy for the Union.

[edit] Executive

The members of the Union elect annually an executive committee of four full time [sabbatical officer]s and six non-sabbatical officers. The Union does not have a post of "President" on the executive committee.

The full time posts are:

Academic Officer :- Cammie Fulmer
Communications Officer :- Rowena Boddington
Finance Officer :- Andrew Taylor
Executive 2006/2007
Executive 2006/2007
Welfare Officer :-Ruth Stone

The part time posts are:

Environment Officer :- Sannah Malik :)
Ethical Issues Officer :- Sean Rose
International Officer:- Tamsyn Ross
Liberations Officer :- Bex Wilson
Publicity Officer :- Caroline Williams
Societies Officer :- Andy Judson
Sports Officer :- James Turner
Women's Officer :- Amy Wilson

The full time officers meet year round in a management committee to decide on day to day operational matters relating to the Union and its subsidiary companies (these officers also serving as four of the six directors of those companies). The decisions of the management committee are ratified by the full executive committee which meets during the university term time and which is responsible for ensuring the policy of the Union (as defined by the Union Council or policy ballot) is adhered to.

[edit] Policies

The Union of UEA Students opposes the NUS No Platform Policy. UUEAS favours free speech for all students including extremists.

[edit] Campaigns

The Union campaigns on a wide range of issues, as directed by the democratic processes.

[edit] Graduate Students' Association

Post graduate students are members of the Union of UEA Students but are also members of the Graduate Students Association, a similar body though on a smaller scale to the Union and one of only a few student organisations specifically for post graduate students in the UK.

[edit] Member services

The Union provides a professional advice centre, and funding for clubs and societies.

[edit] Advice centre

The Union provides a professional advice centre that is available for all UEA students free of charge. The five advice workers can provide help and support in many areas of student life. They often deal with academic appeals, financial problems, welfare issues such as accommodation on campus, a housing bureau which includes a housing contract checking service, and personal issues. The Advice Centre also encompasses a job shop, Employability, which is run in conjunction with the university.
