Union-Rennen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Union-Rennen is a Group 2 flat horse race in Germany for three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 2,200 metres (approximately 1 mile 3 furlongs) at Weidenpesch Racecourse, Cologne in June.
It was first run in 1834 and is the oldest horse race in Germany still presently run. Initially it took place at Tempelhof, on the site of what is now Tempelhof International Airport, over a distance of 2,400 metres (1½ miles). From 1837 this increased to 2,800 metres (1¾ miles), until the present distance was introduced in 1888. The race was also held at Hoppegarten and Grunewald before arriving at its current venue in 1947. It is a major trial race for the Deutsches Derby and it is presently run as the Oppenheim Union-Rennen.
