[edit] UU, U and U

Is it really necessary to include all three of Unitarianism, Universalism, and Unitarian Universalism? I think that most of my fellow UUs would probably click at random when confronted with those choices — someone not familiar with UUism and its history is probably lost.

I'd suggest dropping Unitarianism and Universalism and just letting the Unitarian Universalism article do the explaining.

There are differences:

  1. Unitarian Universalism refers to a contemporary religious movement and a small number of organized denominations;
  2. Unitarianism refers to both a contemporary religious movement and a (rather smaller) number of organized denominations, plus the heretical doctrine denying the trinity;
  3. Universalism refers to a historical religious movement and a no-longer-extant denomination, plus the heretical doctrine of universal salvation.

But I think it would be hard pressed to make a navigation choice from this box based on such subtle differences. TreyHarris 19:22, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

This template is to help defuse confusion. When I attended a UU congregation few people were confused about the differences between Unitarianism and Universalism. Rather, they were upset about being confused with the Unity Church and the United Church. I say remove "Unitarianism" and "Universalism". The denominations merged in the sixties anyway, so that Unitarians, Universalists, Unitarian Universalists, Universalist-Unitarians, Irish Non-Subscribing Presbyterians and British "Free Christians" are all under the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists. [edit] Universism

Should we, in spite of Shoaler's comment here, add Universism to this box?

Well, upon previewing my question I notice that the Universism-link is red. I guess we should leave the Universists out of this, then. --Palnatoke 29 June 2005 08:01 (UTC)

If you go to edit it, you'll notice that there is a link there, but it is invisible. -Tydaj 29 June 2005 20:24 (UTC)

[edit] United

I used to attend a Unitarian congregation and many of the more experienced members reported that they were often confused with the United Church of Canada, which is a denomination doctrinally similar to the United Church of Christ but historically more closely related to the United Methodist Church. Of course, it is Christian and thus totally unrelated to UUism. Carolynparrishfan 18:38, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Concern about lack of universal use of template

On the Unitarian Universalist Association talk page, I noticed a concern about the fact that not all of the organizations listed on this template actually use this template. For example, the template includes United Church of Christ, but the template isn't actually used on that page. It seems to me that confusion is a two-way street --- if the UUA is confused with the UCC, then the UCC would also be confused with the UUA. Shouldn't all the terms listed on the template use the template? I will go ahead and make this change unless I hear objections. Rickterp 18:55, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
