[edit] Move to University of Valencia?

Should this university be called by its English name in the English namespace? Smerdis of Tlön 15:27, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I believe a redirect from that Page would suffice.Tombride 20:57, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Done. I am assuming that the name of the university is given in Catalan; I don't think Spanish uses an è, and in Castilian -tate(m) usually ends up -dade; if this is wrong please fix. What is the chief language of instruction there? Smerdis of Tlön 14:59, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
According to the Wiki article on Spanish, Castillian and Spainish are the interchangeable, but the two terms are often used in different contexts. The webpage of the university is published in both "Castellano" and English. It's probably safe to assume that castilian/spanish is the main language of instruction there. However, that's just an inference on my part and I don't claim any first hand knowledge of the issue.Tombride 18:12, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
The language the college's most detailed website is in is named Valencià, ("Valencian," I presume), and looks very much like Catalan to me. Apparently some Catalan speakers in Valencia consider Valencian a separate language from Catalan; at this remove the difference seems slight. Think this will have to wait for someone who knows. Smerdis of Tlön 16:37, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
The main language is castilian (castellano). Valencian has only recently been revived after previously being repressed. The name universitat is valencian, as opposed to universidad (castilian). This is in line with the general use of the language in the city - on road signs etc but not spoken so much. The differences in the languages are not huge but don't say that to a valencian! The official name of the university is Universitat de València, that name is used in all official paperwork. Regarding languages students can choose if they prefer classes in Spanish or in Valencian, though some classes are only in one of them (depending on avaiability of teachers, timetables,...), but when it comes to wallsigns and (as I mentioned official paperwork) Valencian is more commonly used.
And, Russell aidan, Valencian is actually used in Valencia, and a lot. --81.202.206.92 14:50, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Date of foundation?

I think the catholic encyclopedia is wrong on the date of foundation of 1411. The universitat website quotes it as 1499, and states that they celebrated their 500th anniversary in 1999. I am altering the article to use text from the universitat website. 81.156.246.203 16:23, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
