The article Holland Hall has been listed as an article for deletion. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Holland Hall. The discussion is moving towards merging it into University of Exeter. There seems to be no consideration of the fact that there are pages for five other Halls at Exeter and that University of Exeter Halls of Residence exists. The page was badly written and obvious vanity from a Holland Hall resident. I have have had an attempt to make it better. If you want to keep this article, and perhaps all the others on Halls at Exeter (and indeed the many articles on Halls elsewhere) go to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Holland Hall and vote to keep it. Give reasons. Votes without reasons are often ignored. I have done what I can, but I have no real interest in Exeter University. I just have an interest in articles on Halls and Colleges and came across this deletion notice by chance. --Bduke 21:30, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

I've nominated the article in question for a merge into this article. To be honest, I'm only doing this as a courtesy. I have a feeling it's going to be deleted eventually. [edit] Merge in of University of Exeter Halls of Residence

  • Disagree. Articles on Halls are difficult as they get vandalised by members of the Hall. I got these on my watch list when an article on Holland Hall was up for deletion. The result of that debate was that University of Exeter Halls of Residence was created and ALL articles on Exeter Halls were merged there. In some other universities since then the same process has happened but in other cases several individual Hall articles still exist. I take the view that Halls can be notable and that they deserve more than just listing on the main University page. If this longish article is merged into University of Exeter then either that article will be unbalanced or too much information about the Halls will be lost. Leave them both as they are. It was a reasonable compromise earlier in the year. --Bduke 23:19, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

In support of the above, several of Exeter's Halls are the old family homes of historically important local families, and in the case of Reed Hall, is also the home to an early botanical Garden. I believe that interest in Halls of Residence goes beyond their connexion with a University. --Dan 17:26, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. This is generating both controversy and frankly a lot of ignorance in the media at the moment. If anyone wants to have a bash at sourcing this and keeping it accurate and bias free (which I may not be able to given my blog comments on this) this feel free to use the sites I've linked to in my blog posts on this matter:

We need to tone down the CU sutff. This wiki is about Exeter University, but 1/4 of it is dedicated to the CU - an imbalancement to say the least.

[edit] Split Students' Guild

While part of the University, the Guild is fully independent, and contains a large number of societies. Some of these societies are notable in their own right, such as Xpression FM and Exeposé. The Guild manages millions of pounds of facilities (shops, pubs, etc). Its management has sometimes been controversial within the University, and this year has come into the glare of the mainstream media with the Evangelical Christian Union disputes. I think the Students' Guild should be split into it's own entry. --h2g2bob 15:39, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Agree- h2g2bob has raised a very good point. I agree the the Guild does warrant an article in its own right. I have had a quick look at other British university student union/guild articles on wikipedia and Bristol, Birmingham and Oxford are all quite good. Disagree- Theres very little else to say about the guild than whats already in the article. The societies attached to it are hardly noteworthy and its going to act as an invitation for students to vandalise the page regarding their club/soc. Also currently I feel the student media pages are circling the AfD drain, so it may be worth merging them into one "student media at exeter" article.

Agree- Someone has gone and deleted the very good Xpression FM page despite it being one of the most comprehensive sources of information on the Station on the internet. I think it should be restored. Guild life, and particularly the Radio station can be the most significant part of a students experience at Exeter. Sitting on the Fence The Xpression FM article came to the attention of an AfD over a month ago (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Xpression FM) because at the time it had a long list of non-notable people associated with the station, and no references for the rest of the text. The article was later trimmed (by me) but unfortunately had already attracted enough negative attention to cause it to be deleted. If the Guild is split off, I'd suggest being very careful that it doesn't become a directory of staff/students, soap box, or list of societies.Chriswiki 20:53, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
Agree The Students' Guild is a completely separate and distinct organisation and will soon become a full charity (like most Students' Union/Guilds) under the recently amended Charities Act. The Students Guild is one of the leading Union/Guilds in the UK in many different areas. THe Guild Affiliated Organisations (X-Media[X-tv, Exepose, X-pression FM and X-net], Community Action and Exeter RAG Charities Appeal) are national leaders inparticular for their support and development opportunities and help produce some of the most employable graduates in the country. On top of this Community Action provide one of the highest numbers of student volunteers in the UK to community groups and RAG raises £70,000+ per annum for nominated charities throughout the UK. Disagree It really isn't notable on it's own - how's it any different from any other student's union? Certainly keep the section on it in this article, though perhaps cut it down a little, but no, it really shouldn't be forked off, 'else it'll be an obvious candidate either for a speedy-delete per A7, or an AfD that'll likely result in deletion. Agree I would normally agree that SU's aren't notable enough on their own for their own articles, but I believe this one is by virtue of the ECU controversy (which has recived widespread national coverage).
As said ECU issue may now be set to re-ignite, it should be born in mind that this section may grow bigger, and it takes up a fair chunk of the article page as is. Man from the Ministry (talk) 01:30, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Comment Surely that isn't really relevant? Just because another Student Union isn't notable doesn't mean that all SUs are unnotable. The Exeter Students' Guild has been involved in events that have been the subject of national reportage and may need its own article, to prevent this section bloating the University article. In the introduction it says "British newspapers currently tend to rank Exeter among the top five education institutions in the UK" yet in the Academic Ranking section none of the UK rankings show it even in the top 10. 134.226.1.194 (talk) 17:23, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
