This claim about University of Colombo being the oldest university is false. University of Ceylon was founded temporarily in Colombo in 1942 while the permanent buildings were being put up at Peradeniya. Once built, University of Ceylon moved to Peradeniya. The buildings in Colombo continued to be used by University of Ceylon.

When University of Ceylon was broken up, I believe in the 1970s, naturally, University of Peradeniya became the legal successor to University of Ceylon and therefore retains all the documents and archives of University of Ceylon. University of Colombo was established much later by using the buildings of University of Ceylon (now University of Peradeniya).

At most therefore, Colombo can claim to have the oldest university buildings and campus of Sri Lanka. To claim to be the oldest university is a little too much for a university claiming to uphold and advance learning and knowledge.

[edit] Cleanup after COI edits

On 24 Feb, a series of 11 edits were made by user:Malakadew who has since been blocked for self-promotional editing and COI. Some of these edits seem to be constructive, e.g. provision of links to departments' home pages; so rather than revert them all I have simply removed those names he added which do not have existing Wikipedia entries, i.e. for which there is no confirming information.
