In response to Jareha at List of University of Texas at Austin people: For our first selected biography, I think that we should consider one of the big names, such as Walter Cronkite, or something a little "odd," such as Kinky Friedman. I'd like to, at least for the beginning, shy away from beating our chest (Vince Young), controversy and tragedy (Charles Whitman), and things less mainstream (anything related to academics).

Our "Did you know?" section can certainly mention something more obscure, though. The other night, I wrote three new UT biographies at Robert S. Boyer, Karen Uhlenbeck, and Jonathan Sessler, and Scm83x pumped out a fourth at Yale Patt. We'll hopefully see Jonathan Sessler up on the Main Page DYK soon, whose "work on expanded porphyrins led to the development of 'texaphyrins,' used to treat neoplastic and cardiovascular disease and named such due to his post as a professor at The University of Texas at Austin." Don't ask me what a porphyrin is, though — I have no idea; that's what the link is for, I suppose. ;) — Rebelguys2 ^talk 03:27, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Is Sessler still there? Does he still do those chemistry circuses? Sessler was pushing to get texaphyrin adopted as the Texas State Molecule for a while, but the buckyball guy had his own lobby. How did that turn out? I guess I'll have to go over to Jonathan Sessler and find out. BTW a Porphyrin is basically a molecule with multiple ring subunits, where some of the corners of the rings are occupied by atoms other than carbon (nitrogen works nicely). My suggestion is Janis Joplin. Kinda well known, but kinda quirky. Represents Austin as well as UT. I think Walter Cronkite would be a good choice also. I agree with steering clear of Whitman and Young for our very first choice. We can feature them in good time. Johntex\^talk 03:42, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Those "Did you knows?" are there just so that section isn't redlinked; feel free to change them out. Janis Joplin or Kinky Friedman work for me, especially considering Walter Cronkite is already represented in the quotes section. jareha ^(comments) 03:48, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

(off topic) I created texaphyrin - I don't think it was named simply because Sessler went to UT, I think it has to do with the shape. Also, the state molecule is the buckyball.[1] So Sessler lost that one - funny what winning the Nobel Prize will do for your molecules campaign. Johntex\^talk 04:11, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Enlargement

I think the name of the portal should be changed simply to Portal:University of Texas, to include the enitre system. It gives a broader base of articles, but Autin would still be the main focus. Joe I 20:09, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

I was once firmly opposed to this idea because the campuses don't have that much in common. Upon reflection, I am still not convinced, but I think it is worth more discussion. I would like to hear more from people who would like to see the portal expanded, such as what articles might be good for inclusion, etc. Actually, just seeing more people speak up for the idea would go some ways to convincing me. At the moment, my belief is that people have the most interest in the campus they attended. I don't think people will be interested in putting time into something more general.
