The University of Houston (often referred to as "U of H", "UH", or "Houston") is a public doctoral/research university located in Houston, Texas. It is the flagship institution and the only doctoral degree-granting university in the University of Houston System, which includes three other universities and two multi-institution teaching centers. Founded in 1927, the University serves more than 35,300 students on a 560-acre campus southeast of Downtown Houston. It currently is the third-largest university in the state of Texas and twenty-third largest university in the United States by enrollment, awarding more than 6,600 degrees annually.

The University of Houston System (often referred to as "UH System" or "UHS") is a state system of higher education which oversees and funds four independent, self-governing universities and two multi-institution teaching centers (MITCs, pronounced "mit-sees"). The University of Houston System is the fourth-largest university system in the U.S. state of Texas. With more than 56,000 students and 4,000 faculties total from four universities, it is the largest metropolitan public system of higher education in Texas. Jody Williams (born October 9, 1950 in Brattleboro, Vermont) is an American teacher and aid worker who received the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the campaign she led, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL). Williams first trained as a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL), receiving a BA from the University of Vermont in 1972 and a Master's degree in teaching Spanish and ESL from the School for International Training (also in Vermont) in 1974. In 1984 she received a second M.A. in International Relations from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. Williams continues to serve the ICBL as a campaign ambassador and editor of the organization's landmine report, and, since 2003, has held a faculty position of distinguished professor of social work and global justice at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton spoke at a rally for his wife, and U.S. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at the University of Houston on February 20, 2008. The rally was held in Hofheinz Pavilion in front of thousands of students, alumni, faculty, and staff as well as community residents.
