Unhallowed is an album by the melodic death metal/metalcore band The Black Dahlia Murder. It was released by Metal Blade on June 17, 2003.
The first track, Unhallowed, is an instrumental song that ends and flows into the second song, Funeral Thirst. Funeral Thirst is about a zombie rising from the grave to wreak havoc and seek revenge on living humans. The song Elder Misanthropy tells of an ancient god who feels nothing but hatred for humans as he's watched them degenerate into horrible beasts as his existence has progressed. Contagion tells, quite literally, of a zombie apocalypse. When the Last Grave Has Emptied also tells the story of a zombie apocalypse, but from the perspective of Mankind. Thy Horror Cosmic is a tribute to H.P. Lovecraft, and Cthulhu. Some of the lyrics are actually borrowed from Lovecraft's story "The Call of Cthulhu". The song The Blackest Incarnation is about a Werewolf. Hymn for the Wretched is a song written for all the creatures and objects on the planet that have had ties to the Darkness. The song Closed Casket Requiem has references to the Black Dahlia murder case. The lyrics are about the killer's point of view and include a description of its acts. The final song on the record, Apex, is about a cannibal, making the spoken word intro and outro to the record all the more appropriate.
The intro and outro to this record come from the guide "Butchering the Human Carcass for Human Consumption" The intro is a narration of the section "Gutting" and the outro is from the section titled "Beheading".
