Can we make this a disambig page? or move Underworld (band) to another article altogether? Other ideas?

I would say keep the mythological concept of the underworld here, and move the band stuff to "underworld (band)". TRhere's a club in Camden called the Underworld too... -- Tarquin 13:26 Sep 25, 2002 (UTC)

Actually should Underworld be disambigious? I've already seperated the band, but there is also a novel by Don Delillo, and probably countless other references -- Greg Godwin 13:38 Sep 25, 2002 (UTC)

Yes, but the "death people"-underworld is still the primary meaning of the word. You can make a disambiguation page, and link to it from this page using a disambiguation block. Jeronimo

makes sense, i'll do that then, not sure if the format is right though Greg Godwin 13:49 Sep 25, 2002 (UTC)

I'm moving the disambig to the top. That seems to be the standard and it makes sense--if someone's looking for the band they may just give up when they see the articles is not about the band (or novel) and not scroll down. User:Tokerboy

Anyone know why there seem to be Deities of the underworld listed alongside actual underworlds on this list? --Dante Alighieri | Talk 23:31, May 3, 2004 (UTC)

Why are Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Vodun not tagged as "mythologies" like the rest of the religions? --Iisaphd 02:02, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

    • I suspect that this reflects a shortage of accepted nouns in English. They could just as well all be tagged as "Navajo religious beliefs" and "Hindu religious beliefs" . Any label (religion, mythology, zeitgeist) will push a point of view, so it is safest (and WP policy) to use the most widely-recognized names. You can imagine the dispute if you seriously proposed Christian mythology. Your POV would be eminently supportable, but could never achieve consensus. Dystopos 03:17, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
      • Dystopos is probably right. There's no commonly used English word for the Navajo religion, so we use Navajo mythology, which is both accurate and descriptive. Christian mythology would also be accurate and descriptive, but is not the most common name for that topic. There was a long debate at Talk:Christian mythology which may be interesting. Tuf-Kat 04:46, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
        • Christianity is the only one not tagged as a mythology, which is curious. I couldn't care less what was discussed in Talk:Christian mythology. That said, unless there is some legitimate reason why Islam is a myth, having nearly 2 billion followers, I am changing it.MPA
          • All of them should be labeled mythologies. The amount of followers is a moot point and an argument from popularity. Ignitus 10:43, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
            • Seeing as the word "myth" is often used to refer to something that is considered by many to be true, but in fact, not true, the only things here that may logically considered "myth" (by the aforementioned definition) are those that are defunct or somehow proven to be false. I know that in this case, the word myth is used in a different sense, but there are a lot of people that don't. The usage of that word should be clarified on the page, otherwise it will just go on and on, needlessly being edited back and forth by various persons.MVMosin 19:23, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
              • Everything has mythology. We should not argue about it or favor any certain religion. The same definition now applies to all. --67.187.4.81 21:18, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Definition of underworld

Should this page cover all places for dead souls or just those with negative connotations. The is a central question as it determins which links for various cultures are appropriate.

Wikitony has: The world of the dead, located underneath the world of the living; the afterlife.[1]

Personally I feel it is better if the list is more inclusive, as it makes it easier to find the heaven equivalents to some culture.--Salix alba (talk) 18:32, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
