As it relates to the underground railroad in Kentucky, my grandmother was proud of the fact that her girlhood home in Cropper, Kentucky, was a part of the "railroad." Similar to many houses of that time, hers was a two story brick house with a side porch and a gable that extended over the porch. It had a "fan" shaped window. On the inside of the house, there was a false wall with a fan shaped window to make it appear that it was actually the outside wall. Slaves would hide in that small area.
