Unctuous Crier

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Unctuous Crier was a satirical publication that skewered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA. Often called The Crier for short, it began as a small printed publication in 1986, and was published intermittently up through 2005, first as a standalone dot-com web site and later as a blog through Blogger. Some of the Crier's archived stories are available online.

The Crier's first issue (Volume One, Number One), published in 1986, included the articles "Old, Rich Guys Build New Basketball Arena" and "Six Trees Still Remain on South Campus." Other notable Crier stories included:

  • Head State Employee Proclaims State Employee Appreciation Week (May 2001)
  • Wendy's Big Business for University Hospitals (March 2001)
  • Med Dean Tries to Funnel $11 Million in Bond Funds (March 2001)
  • Giant Screen to Back Moeser at All Public Appearances (March 2001)
  • BOHICA! University Hires New Football Coach (March 2001)
  • Moeser Unhappy with New Work Environment, South Building Gutted (October 2000)
  • Don't Even Think About Parking Here (October 2000)
  • Let No Fallen Leaf Sully Our Campus (August 2000)
  • State Gets Budget In On Time (October 2000)

  • Poll: Several Alumni Not Yet Driving SUVs (August 2000)
  • Three Football Players Not Arrested Today... (March 2001)
  • Four on Campus Yet to Win Distinguished Service Award... (October 2000)

On June 24, 2000 the Crier's servers were hacked by someone calling him or herself "n3o." That person destroyed the majority of the Crier's online back issues, some of which dated back to 1986.
