[edit] History

On October 2, 1893, Julius Tutwiler Wright opened the University Military School – an all-boys school - on 559 Conti Street in Mobile, Alabama. The school’s 25 students were taught by 1 teacher and paid 8 dollars per month tuition. Six years later, the school’s enrollment quadrupled to roughly 100 students. In 1923, Dr. Wright established the Julius T Wright School for Girls on 1315 Dauphin Street in Mobile, Alabama. In 1931, Dr. Wright died of pneumonia. With his death, the girl’s school closed. University Military School (UMS) remained open under the leadership of William Pape until his death in 1943 and then under the leadership of the Pape family. In 1946, the Pape family turned over operation of the school to the UMS Alumni and Parents Association Inc. In 1956, UMS moved to its current location at North Mobile Street and the Julius T. Wright School for Girls (JTW) reopened at its former location. Enrollment at UMS was over 500 students. In 1972, JTW moved to a University Boulevard campus. In 1988, the board of trustees of both school decided to merge the two schools to create the present UMS-Wright. The Honor Council, a jury for students accused of wrongdoing, has been around since before the schools merged.
