Umkomaas Drift School

Before the first formal school for Indians in Umkomaas, KwaZulu-Natal was established, there were a few places at different times where individuals taught a group of children free of charge or for an allowance. These were called "private" schools (this should not be confused with the private schools of today). In 1922, a French man, Mr. W. C. Sissing, ran a "private school" at Cragieburn. There was another room of mud under thatch at Roseneath, where a teacher of Zulu descent, Mr. K. Nkama, taught a few pupils. Mr. R. C. Naidoo later opened another "private school" at Roseneath, where a certain Mr. David taught for small fee. A few fortunate individuals benefited from these "private schools".
