[edit] Settlements

Ulvik village is located at the end of the Ulvik fjord, a side arm of the Hardangerfjord, and has 678 inhabitants as of 2007.[1] As the urban area covers only 0.97 km², the population density is 699 per km². The population of the municipality is 1,107 as of 2008, and the vast majority who do not live within the urban area either live at the end of the Osafjord, immediately east or south-east of the urban area, or on the farms surrounding it. The centre of the Ulvik village, Brakanes, has a cinema as well as a few shops.

[edit] History

Ulvik was an annex to Granvin until 1858, when Ulvik became the main parish, and Granvin became an annex to Ulvik. Granvin and Eidfjord were separated from Ulvik as municipalities of their own May 1, 1891.[2]

[edit] Origin of the name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Ulvik (Norse Ulfvík), where the first church was built. The first element is ulfr m 'wolf', the last element is vík f 'bay'.[2]

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms was approved on December 19, 1986. It shows a figure similar to the selburose (see also the coat-of-arms of Selbu). This figure is used in the bunad of Ulvik.
