The Smooth-leaved Elm Ulmus minor subsp. minor cultivar 'Virgata' was described by Pepin [2] (as Ulmus campestris virgata) in Revue Hort. 1865: 347, 1865, as having slender, erect branches bestowing a fastigiate shape. Planted before 1789 near Nangis, Seine-et-Marne [1], it is unlikely the tree remains in cultivation.
