Ukrainian citizenship
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Citizenship of Ukraine is governed by the Law on Citizenship of Ukraine and by the Ukrainian Constitution.
Citizens of Ukraine are defined as:
- citizens of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, present and permanently living on the territory of the former Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic at the moment of the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine on August 24, 1991;
- stateless persons, residing on the territory of Ukraine on November 13, 1991;
- stateless persons, not present on the territory of Ukraine on November 13, 1991, but born or permanently residing in Ukraine, who had filed for Ukrainian citizenship by December 31, 1999.
[edit] Acquisition of the Citizenship
- by birth;
- by origin;
- by birth to the Ukrainian parents;
- naturalization (permanent residence requirement of 5 continuous years in Ukraine).
Ukrainian Law currently does not allow dual-citizenship. The law states that the Ukrainian citizenship is automatically lost at the time of voluntary acquisition of a citizenship of another country.[1] However, the decision on termination of Ukrainian citizenship can only be adopted by the President,[2] and in practice such decisions have been rare.
