[edit] Who England Must Beat in the 2006 FIFA World Cup
To show what predictions are correct I have placed symbols next to each team after the final result is known. These symbols are to show if I was correct in my predictin of who was going to make it past the previous stage.
- - I was correct in my prediction on who would make it to this point.
- - In the group stage I predicted the correct winners but I was incorrect on how they would place.

[edit] Reasons for my Predictions
My main focus was on the odds on favorites and how they will meet each other.
[edit] World Cup betting odds
[edit] Pre-Cup odds
Here are some other odds that whent out before the start of the world cup on who will get to the final!
- 10/1 Brazil v Argentina
- 11/1 shot that England face Brazil in the final
- 18/1 that England face Germany
- 20/1 England face-to-face with Argentina.
- 40/1 Italy v Spain
- 50/1 Germany v France
- while USA v Iran was a massive 20,000/1!
It would be astounding if anyone bothers to bet on USA v Iran... What a payoff if it happens!
[edit] The odds as of June 16th 2006
- 3.75 Brazil
- 6.00 England
- 7.50 Argentina
- 9.00 Germany
- 11.0 Italy
- 11.0 Spain
- 15.0 Holland
- 17.0 France
- .....
- 751 USA
[edit] The odds as of June 26th 2006
Ouch, the odds are drifting away for England to win the world cup. I think this is because we have to face Brazil before the final to make it. Lets hope that England can pull its all star weight and meld into a unified team to confront the upcoming nemesis.
- 3.75 Brazil
- 4.30 Argentina
- 6.50 Germany
- 6.50 England
- 7.00 Italy
- 11.0 Spain
- 15.0 Portugal
- 21.0 France
- 41.0 Ukraine
- 151. Ghana
[edit] The odds as of June 30th 2006
- 3.00 Germany
- 3.25 Brazil
- 4.50 Italy
- 7.50 England
- 11.0 France
- 15.0 Portugal
[edit] Status of my Predictions
[edit] Minor Group winners
I think there might be some minor differences with minor groups like Groups D, E, H or who gets second to Brazil in Group F.
But what would astound me is if Brazil comes in second in Group F... Then that would leave England clear to dominate and get to the finals without major opposition! But for that to happen Brazil would have to loose by 2 against Japan allowing Australia get the 1st place in Group F. So I highly doubt that his will happen.
[edit] England Won Group B
Was it a good idea that England won its set?
If you believe that England is the superior to Germany and Argentina and the only real team to fear in the world cup is Brazil then the English team made a mistake and should have lost to Sweden to guarantee a Finals match between England and Brazil.
Yet getting second place could have been disastrous since we would have had to face Germany & Argentina back to back, and after facing them the possibilities of injuries would diminish the chances of a win against Brazil. Yet there was a bonus of a slight pause at the Semi-Finals where people with a Red card could still play the Final and anyone with a Yellow card could skip the match to have a clean slate for the final.
But getting first place in Group B has the advantage of two relatively easy games before an all but guaranteed Semi-Finals match between England and Brazil. A nail biter if I can think of one!
In the End it came down to a decision between:
- two hard games ( → ); followed by a relatively easy game (); then a really hard game ().
- two relatively easy games ( → ); a really hard game (); followed by a hard game ().
Only time will tell if the right call was made
[edit] Second place winners in Groups E & F
Firstly as I stated earlier there would probably be some changes to some minor groups & who would come in second to Brazil.
Well I predicted that the second place winners would be the Czech Republic for Group E & Croatia for Group F and not surprisingly I was wrong with Group F and Australia came in second to Brazil.
But I must say that I didn't consider for Group E that the Czech's would have to beat Italy to place second. It was a bit of an oversight since Ghana had a better chance of beating America then the Czech's had at beating Italy and that would have been a very hard thing to do. So the only reasonable country to get second place was Ghana. So Italy placed first and Ghana came in second in Group E.
Oh well, I guess we'll see if there is a change in my prediction for Group G soon.
