Ukhod velikovo startza , also known as Departure of a Grand Old Man made in Russia in 1912 , is a silent film adapted from Leo Tolstoy's 1890 short story Father Sergius. It was actress Olga Petrova's first silent film. It was produced and directed by Yakov Protazanov and Elizaveta Thiman. The film depicts a group of peasants who come to the home of Leo Tolstoy to ask for land. Tolstoy explains to them that his wife owns the land and she will not help them. Tolstoy and his wife have many arguments afterward and he becomes depressed and overwhelmed by the problems around him. It ends with Tolstoy on his death bed being visited by Christ. The film was banned because of the negative portrayal of Tolstoys wife Sophie Behrs Tolstoy though Tolstoy’s family fortune was due to his efficiency in managing his money that came from his writings and his estates.
