UK Data Archive

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The UK Data Archive is based at the University of Essex. It is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Joint Information Systems Committee of the Higher Education Funding Councils, and the University of Essex. It was founded in 1967, and now houses several thousand datasets for secondary use in research, learning and teaching in the social sciences and humanities [1].

According to Bryman (2004)[1], Chapter 10, this archive is likely to be the main source for researchers who wish to use secondary data in quantitative research (presumably he is mainly addressing UK researchers). Bryman also says that if researchers apply to the ESRC for research grants where they are proposing to collect new data, they will be required to demonstrate that relevant data are not already available in this archive.
