[edit] News Section

Is it worth deleting this as its over a month old? Jt spratt 17:55, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

IMHO this portal has been left behind. I even believe its been inadvertently rename,as currently it makes you think about the historic concept of "BR", rather than "rail transport in GB"... Pickle 18:56, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
I agree this should be renamed and made the responsibility of WikiProject UK Railways. Jt spratt 08:11, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
So do I as that project is exactly what this portal is all about and it states in things to do start a project for this portal. Unisouth 10:34, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tool for Education or American propaganda

Is Wikipedia a resource for education and carrying FACTS or a tool for American propaganda? I have edited out reticules claims by Americans in the Land speed record for railed vehicles and Empire State Express only to have arrogant Americans delete them and accuse me of pov can we have a neutral observer look at these sections Oxyman 02:20, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Appearance

Good evening (GMT time) my fellow Wikipedians; I'd like to request all assistance that is available on a revamp of our Portal. The page, whilst with decent content, has a rather out of date and ugly appearance.

I propose a change in colour scheme, with a change to a lighter green scheme. The current navy blue scheme is rather heavy on the eye, and doesn't suit the page at all.

I've got plenty experience with revamps, having just single-handedly began the revamp of WP:WELCOME, before receiving the assistance of a very talented Wikipedian, The Transhumanist to wrap up a now up-to-date and pleasing-on-the-eye resource for our new users.

The existing content should largely be kept, especially the introduction; however, the red-linked DYK sections, and over-large selected picture section would be receiving particular focus.

Any assistance in the project would be appreciated gladly - a Wiki is about collaboration between our editors.

Kind regards,
anthonycfc [talk] 19:24, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] UK Railways

The portal has been slightly neglected of late, and had slipped into disrepair. I've done a quick patch-up, with a brighter colour scheme, but I'd like some wider contribution from the folks here at PPR. I'm particularly interested in any sections of the Portal that should not be included, as well as any new sections that should be added.

Kind regards,
anthonycfc [talk] 21:53, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey, well let's get started:

  • The browse at the top should link Portal:Trains then list your portal as a sub of that.Done
  • The intro should bold link the main article Rail transport in Great Britain at the beginning such as all articles. Seems to be very lacking in other linkage.
  • Related portals - should be symmetrical
  • Pic - Should have credits, no caption, instead a description layed out underneath. Please see any featured portal.
  • Wikiprojects - Since you only have one, I recommend adding parent projects such as train and transport.
  • DYK - Layout should resemble Template:Did you know, mainly with the additions of links and bolding the main article intended.
  • Cats - Start with Category:Rail transport in Great Britain and fill out from there, the box as of now seems really paltry.
  • Things you can do - Remove the {{Portal|UK Railways}}.Done
  • Include {{WikimediaForPortals}}Done--Jorvik 20:55, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Add a major topics section
  • Add lists under any appropriate section

Once those major things are done, we can take a closer look at it. Good luck :) Joe I 07:43, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

That's exactly what I've been looking for! Thanks for your contributions :) Regards, anthonycfc [talk] 13:55, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Where is it?

I put up a request here for my wikiportal links in my Portal:Kabbalah to be like they have it in the Spirituality portal, but I was surprised to see it is missing. But anyway, I want it like it is in that portal; but instead of all those links (along with the logos of course) I want to have Judaism, and Occult as the links, with the associated logos. If anybody could help me do it; please leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Lighthead 23:54, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Penmanshiel Tunnel

What do people think about creating an article on Penmanshiel Tunnel - in particular it's collapse and the subsequent diversion of the ECML. I've found an online copy of the official report into the incident, and also some sites containing pictures etc of the diversion which was built afterwards.

I've never written an article so wouldn't know where to start myself, but I was surprised to find not a single mention of this topic in wikipedia - surely it counts as one of the most unusual episodes in railway history in recent years?

Let me know what you think and I can post the link to the official report if it's useful.

Great idea mate. If you sign up and get an account you can create an article just by typing tis name in (assuming there isn't a page there already). As a guide look at other tunnel article and/or other railway accident articles for the sorts of section, etc you should use (i assume there are also templates to use). If you post over at Wikipedia:WikiProject UK Railways or its talk page Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways you'll get a wider response from UK rail fans. Pickle 15:30, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
Hey Pickle, thanks for your suggestion - I have taken your advice and started an article on this topic. To be honest I have read through a few of the help pages and found the whole thing highly confusing! I have looked at a number of articles on UK tunnels that currently exist and have based my page on some of the best elements of each of these.
I would really appreciate you and other experienced users taking a look and maybe suggesting ways in which the page can be improved, and also advice on whether I have stuck to the guidelines etc. I have just basically taken the approach that each paragraph should add something to the reader's understanding of the subject of the article.
I'll also follow your other suggestion and put a topic posting on the other talk pages.ColourSarge 23:39, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
You've done a great job so far! There is saying around here Be Bold! and you've done just that and made a good job of it. Pickle 04:52, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Stuttgart Tramway Museum

I started to edit a Tram Zuff page within my local area. I do not know the rules and regulars of the english WP. In germany I shoud use {{inuse}} to note that the page is in work - please tell me (or edit it into my page) your conventions. --SonniWP 22:58, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

There are some technical terms I do not know to translate to english. Fahrschalter is a special electric switch like a throttle managed by a crane. Schleifringfahrschalter ist another kind of such an switch implemented by a connector ring, contact ring or an adhesive ring --SonniWP 12:42, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
{{inuse}} is fine. Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 13:26, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
All the time its on a page in your user space then there is no problem. If your doing an overhaul of a page on Wikipedia itself then you can also use that. Pickle 17:58, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
As for technical help try asking the various wikiprojects such as Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains, etc. Pickle 18:22, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Did you know

The statement that the two Tyndrum stations are the closest on the network is incorrect - there are plenty of counter examples I can think of, for example Catford and Catford Bridge. For maps proving this, see [1] and [2]. I believe that Tyndrum is the smallest settlement in Britain with more than one station, but that's not what the portal states. – Tivedshambo (talk) 07:45, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

I have removed the incorrect fact. --Jorvik 21:48, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DYK - Lack of links

Of the three DYK facts displayed on the main portal page today, only one has a link to an article. This is a shame because one of the facts with missing links has fascinated me, but I am unable to find out more....

Can anyone shed any light on the one about three stations where the operators responsible for the station don't actually serve the station?ColourSarge (talk) 14:54, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
