[edit] Early discussions
For God sake change the 2005 data. Liverpool beat Chelsea 1-0 in the semi final and the final hasn't even taken place yet!
but isn't the Cup Winners' cup now part of the Champs league? or is it part of the Uefa cup? Those Blatter changes have me all confused! JHK
- According to the uefa website, the uefa cup is open to cup winners and teams that finished immediately behind champions league qualifiers. At some stage, I suppose we'll have to explain the difference between league and cup championships for our American friends :)--Robert Merkel
-
- <giggle> I'm actually one of them, but married into a Charlton Athletic family -- even got cornered by the uncles at the wedding reception and quizzed on football (best striker? best keeper? who were the Busby babes?...). so the Uefa cup is the one that combines the old Cup inners' Cup and the Uefa cup. Good. Now the really fun thing would be not only explaining league and cup championships, but how the Worthington cup used to be the Coca-cola cup... ;-) JHK
Should the European Champions Club Cup winners be added to this article or should there be another article on this?
- This article should cover both the old and new competitions, as the Champions League is basically just a new format for the good old-fashioned European Cup. I'd also suggest moving this article to UEFA Champions League, as that's its full title and is less ambiguous. sjorford 10:56, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- Please change this to UEFA Champions League as there is a similar Champions League called AFC Champions League in Asia. Mandel 17:48, Sep 27, 2004 (UTC)
- There were also some sad moments. There was the 1958 Munich air disaster in which some Manchester United players died, breaking a marvellous team.
The Munich air disaster is sad, but it is not part of the Champions League history. Mandel 04:03, Sep 6, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Order of table
Wouldn't it make more sense to have the table in chronological order, with the earliest at the top? It's not far to scroll down to see the latest winners. sjorford 11:11, 4 May 2004 (UTC)
- perhaps the table should be split by 10-year spans or by decade with an index list - WolfenSilva
Actually I find scrolling down the table quite irratating, the old format of the newest at the top was much easier and more convenient KP-TheSpectre (talk) 08:54, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- I second that. Why try and fix something that isn't broken? Do you really think the most visited year for the champions league will be sometime in the 50's instead of in the last 5 years? Hubschrauber729 (talk) 00:35, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Intercontinental Cup
Hi. I noticed that there's no mention in the article about the fact that the champion of this tournament qualifies for the Intercontinental Cup match against the champion of South America's Copa Libertadores de América. At the very least, the article on the Intercontinental Cup should be linked in the "See Also" section. It seems to be a grave omission (not so much the link in the "See Also" section, but the mention in the article should be there). Regards, Redux 22:50, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)
The reason why the Intercontinental Cup isn't mentioned is that the competition no longer exists. The last Intercontinental Cup was the one held this past summer (2004) between Porto and Once Caldas. FIFA is replacing it with the FIFA Club World Championship. Dale Arnett 03:36, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)
-
- Nevertheless, I think it deserves a short mention. Like: "The winner of the Champions League qualified for the Intercontinental Cup (against the winner of the Libertadores Cup), played yearly between 1960 and 2004." I'll leave it here and, if nobody objects, will put it in the article next week. Nazroon 13:43, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Titleholders' qualification
If someone has time, could we please clear up just whether the titleholder automatically gets a spot in the CL in light of this article? I'll do it myself later if I get time. Thanks, Rupert.
I've just added a treatment of this issue in the "Qualification" section. Hope this helps clear things up. Dale Arnett 03:32, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)
But is this accurate? Guinnog 00:19, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
- the article on champions league history suggests that the holders would take the place of the lowest qualifier in their domestic league. Whether that means that they "automatically do", or "are eligible to", I'm not sure. The UEFA website doesn't really help... Andymarczak 09:54, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
- That's what the whole Liverpool affair was about last summer. The new rules say the title-holders always have a place. Conscious 16:44, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Suggestion for minor reorganization of history
I'm thinking about combining the 1992-1996 and 1997-98 sections into a single section and calling it "1992 to 1998 - The Italian Invitational". On second thought, make that "1989 to 1988..."
Of the 10 finals from 1989-1998, only one did not feature an Italian team. The rundown:
- 1989-90: Milan (won both times)
- 1991: Only matchup not to involve an Italian team
- 1992: Sampdoria (lost)
- 1993-95: Milan (won 1994)
- 1996-98: Juve (won 1996)
Any comments/criticisms? I won't make the change unless I get a fairly clear consensus in favor. Dale Arnett 21:20, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Heysel and Juventus
At the year 1985 where the Heysel tragedy is mentioned it is quoted that "Juventus was banned for one year and it couldn't defend the title". As far as I remember Juventus was punnished similarly as Roma this season (i.e. 3 home matches without any audience) and it actually was defending the title next season as the second Italian team (beside Verona). According to this site (in German) it lost in quarterfinals against Barcelona (who later lost in the finals)
- Yep, I believe you are quite right there, as the Uefa site confirms. I dunno if it's been changed yet. In fact, they beat Jeunesse d'Esch of Luxembourg and fellow Italians Verona in the previous rounds. Starfighter Pilot 19:59, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Rapid aging?
The article mentions the "rapid aging" of the Ajax and Bayern sides. Was this the result of a scientific experiment gone wrong, or could the idea be better expressed? I'm not at all sure what that idea is, though. Mark1 08:09, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] History of the Champions League
Wouldn't it be better to move all the history section to a new article called "History of the Champions League" ?
[edit] Time to do a year by year history of Champions League
There are enough data to do so, particularly the fact that the group stages contain a good number of games which ought to documented. As can be seen from the latest Liverpool victory, having a separate page called UEFA Champions League Season 2004/5 may solve a good lot of problems instead of the lopsided history now presented on this page. Mandel 21:38, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)
- For the 2004/05 season we have all the Champions' League results from the 1st Qualifying Round recorded in the "month in sport" pages; for earlier years you'll have to get the details from outside sources. -- Arwel 21:48, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
-
- How helpful is it to have the details in a "month in sport" page? Not very I think. Most people I presume will search for details under this section and article. Mandel 22:19, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)
- True, but the "month in sport" pages are the archives of Current sports events, where the results were recorded as they happened (together with much other sports news, of course). -- Arwel 22:43, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Steaua - Home grown team ?
The article states " Celtic are the only club to have won the competition with a team comprised entirely of home-grown talent. " Is this true? What about Steaua Bucarest? 14/08/05
Steaua had a Yugoslavian player.
Why is the Manchester United treble described at unprecedented? What is so unprecedented about something done by Celtic, Ajax and PSV?
Answer: Because the Scottish & Dutch leagues are inferior to the English league.
-
- Only someone from a 'big' country can be that chauvinistic. It is not even important if this is true or not for several reasons. Other clubs have also won the treble so it's not unprecedented. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.190.253.148 (talk) 11:30, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- I think that smacks of chauvinism, but it's nonetheless 'unprecedented' in England if the Treble is to be strictly defined as domestic top league + domestic cup + European Champions' Cup/UCL. Man Utd's treble is just the first one to be so publicly lauded in this age, I guess, the rest might have been too long ago.Icedwater (talk) 16:56, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Liverpool controversy
Liverpool fans will hate me for this (good) but I've moved this section here. There's no way this was notable enough to have this much space in this article, although maybe a sentence or two in the Qualification section would be alright. I'm sure it belongs somewhere on Wikipedia though - maybe History of Liverpool F.C. or 2005-06 in English football. Image:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk)
- Does this story deserve an article of its own? Like 2005 UEFA decision on Liverpool F.C.? Conscious 09:32, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think so, but I wouldn't be bothered if it got one. If either Liverpool or Everton had had to drop out of the competition it would have been notable, as it is it's just an administrative cock-up that UEFA managed to fix in time. Image:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 09:43, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
- I think it should have its own article, or, if all the qualification controversies are expanded, included in an article covering them all (or a section here, for instance). The Real Zaragoza incident should be covered in more detail, because I think it's noteworthy. -RomeW

[edit] Liverpool Controversy
Until 2005 if the Champions League winner was from a country that was entitled to send four clubs to the competition, it was not assured of entry unless it was in the top four. This issue came to a head after English club Liverpool won the 2004-05 competition. Liverpool finished fifth in the FA Premier League, one spot outside automatic qualifying position.
After Liverpool won the Champions League, The FA was forced to choose whether to send Liverpool to the 2005-06 competition at the expense of the team that finished fourth - namely Everton, the other major club in Liverpool. As the FA had already decided that the top four Premiership clubs would qualify for the competition despite Liverpool's victory, they decided to continue lobbying for a fifth Champions League place following this win. After this FA decision, UEFA president Lennart Johansson went on record as saying that the Champions League winner should be able to defend its title regardless of its league position. Prior to 2005, if a fourth placed team was denied a Champions League place for this reason, it was granted a place in the UEFA Cup.
The last time such a scenario played out was in 2000, when Real Madrid won the title but finished fifth in the Spanish League. As a result, Real Zaragoza was forced into the UEFA Cup. Two years later, Zaragoza was relegated, an unfortunate turn of events that some fans believed to be a direct result of the lost prestige and revenue.
In June 2005, the UEFA committee met to discuss the fate of Liverpool. Liverpool was awarded a place in the first qualifying round without displacing their arch-rivals Everton - England thus entered 5 teams from the qualifying stages of the competition. Liverpool kept one of the top eight seeds but were not treated as an English side for the purposes of the draw, meaning they could play another English side prior to the quarter-finals. Due to the way in which the seeding works, this means Liverpool could have played city rivals Everton in the third qualifying round.
After qualifying, the Reds were ultimately drawn to play Premiership champions Chelsea in the group phase. Everton failed to qualify because of their loss to Villareal and participated briefly in the UEFA Cup before being knocked out 5-1 on aggregate by Dinamo Bucharest in the very first round.
UEFA also said that the rules have been amended and should the situation arise again, the title holders will replace the 4th placed team in the domestic league (with that team being entered into the UEFA Cup, as happened to Zaragoza in 2000). This ensures that in future, the number of teams from every country will remain stable.
[edit] European Cup and Champions League finals/statistics
I think these sections should be removed and their articles linked to in a See also section. What does everyone else think? Image:Yemen flag large.png CTOAGN (talk) 09:33, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The other European Cups
Hello there. I'm in the process of writing an article for the European ice hockey championship, which was called the "European Cup" (see European Cup (ice hockey) and since 2005 the "European Champions Cup", which has a page at IIHF European Champions Cup. Both those terms redirect here.
Undoubtedly, the vast majority of people who type in "European Cup" want this page. But many sports also have European Cups - off the top of my head I know skiing and basketball also do, maybe there should be a link at the top to a disambig page?
As for "European Champions Cup", the only place I've seen the UEFA Champions League called that is in Championship Manager which has to get creative since they can't use the trademark. I would make that redirect to IIHF European Champions Cup, with a similar link to here for those more interested in footy.
Thoughts? --Legalizeit 15:16, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Liverpool keeping the trophy
Afaik, Liverpool got to keep the trophy "permanently" after winning the Champions League 5 times. This season's winner will get a new trophy. But the third paragraph says Gerrard handed over the trophy after the loss to Benfica this season. Can someone clarify on this?
[edit] Audience figures
An anon. keeps insisting that the league attracts a global audience of over a billion people. This seems clearly false; Googling throws up some authoritative sites (including UEFA itself) which place the figures for the final at 280 million[1] or 200 milllion[2], and other sites say four U.S. billion (four thousand million)[3] for the league as a whole.
Even if the figure is over a thousand million, given the ambiguity of "billion", we should surely stick to the phrase "thousand million" for clarity. Does anyone know what the actual figures are for each, given the discrepancies? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:37, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bernabeu -shocking omission
Liked the article, but found one shocking omission: not one mention of how Santiago Bernabeu helped create the Champions' League (then European Cup) and helped it kick off. He even, in a gesture quoted as 'exceedingly gentlemanly', proposed who should preside the incipient European Football association (and ruled himself out). Now, I'm talking from memory here, but surely someone can find a reference about this? It is widely understood in Spain that Bernabeu had a lot of influence on the begginings of the European cup, and without a mention of him the article would indeed be somewhat lacking. Just an opinion. Raystorm 19:11, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Merge from Champions League Anthem
UEFA Champions League Anthem is a duplicate of the relevant section in this article. If it differs, then I suggest we merge the two into this article. If not, then simply delete the anthem article. (Feel free to PROD it!) haz (user talk) 20:43, 16 May 2006
- I sugest keeping the anthem article and make the section on it here much shorter. For instance, we don't need the full lyrics here. There are more that could be said about the anthem that should go in the anthem article, and also I'd like to have the anthem listed in Category:Anthems and it seems wrong to have this main UEFA Champions league article in that category. [edit] Why No Table?
It would be nice if there were a table showing winners and semifinalists for each year, along with country of origin. I think the page for the Copa Libertadores would be a good model. Anyone want to take this on? --BlueMoonlet 15:03, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
- Never mind, I see that it's here. Editing the main page in an effort to make this more clear. --BlueMoonlet 15:09, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
- These three articles really contain much the same information, but in different formats. This was the root cause of my confusion. It would be good if someone could slim them down, and perhaps unify them. --BlueMoonlet 15:45, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Divers (refering to the Barca v Chelsea match 06)
The worst diver on the pitch was Drogba, that cannot be disputed. However, for Drogba to keep up with the likes of Deco, truly the diving master, must be a real plus point for him. As a suporter of lower opposition, Birmimgham, we belate when our strikers receive an almighty kick and don't go down, so where can FIFA and the FA draw the line. If this issue contiues to develop at the rate it is, players will be receiving marks out of ten for their diving skills, and the pitch will have to be lengthened so players can roll and roll and roll... - The all-time leader in matches played in the European Cup/Champions League is, as of this writing, Paolo Maldini, with 116 appearances. The all-time top goalscorer is Raúl González, although Andriy Shevchenko and Ruud Van Nistelrooy are very close behind. [edit] Man Utd, Porto and Barcelona won only one CL
This post is just to alert future editors for some repeting misled changes that are undoing a fact: Manchester United, FC Porto and FC Barcelona have only won one edition of the Champions League each, since it was established in 1992 (before this it was known as European Champions Clubs Cup or European Cup). In total, the three clubs have been twice European champions: Manchester United in 1968 and 1999, Porto in 1987 and 2004, Barcelona in 1992 and 2006. However, they only won once the Champions League (est. 1992): Manchester United in 1999, Porto in 2004, Barcelona in 2006.
Club | ECCC (1956-1992) |
CL (1992-present) |
---|---|---|
Manchester United | 1968 | 1999 |
FC Barcelona | 1992 | 2006 |
FC Porto | 1987 | 2004 |
I hope this clears out this issue. Parutakupiu talk || contribs 23:41, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] It's called European Champion Clubs' Cup!
The name of the trophy is called European Champion Clubs' Cup, not European Clubs' Champions Cup! I correctly renamed it on the UEFA Champions league page, and swapped the content and the redirect on the pages named European Champion Clubs' Cup and European Clubs' Champions Cup. Really, the latter shouldn't even exist, because it's not called that at all. It should be deleted! I can't believe there's fools like to tink shit like that!
[edit] Naming controversy
There is clearly some disagreement as to what the tournament's name actually was prior to the creation of the Champions' League. As the poster above correctly points out, the only official name the tournament ever had was European Champion Clubs' Cup. This was always the name engraved on the front of the trophy (in French) and still is. This name is also used by UEFA today on their website when refering to pre-1993 tournaments. 'European Clubs' Champions Cup' as far as I am aware was never used as a name under any circumstances, possibly this name arises from poor translations of the official name in some countries. The full official name of the tournament was however rarely used and UEFA would normally shorten the name to European Champions Cup in press releases and so on, and that name was also used widely by the media. You will often see this name used on football stats websites and so on. However the tournament was also called simply The European Cup by the media, and this was probably the most common name used by fans, journalists, players, managers and so on. Most people probably knew the competition by this name. However European Cup was never in any way an official name of the tournament as far as I am aware. In fact, it was actually the official name originally proposed for the tournament by L'Equipe, and UEFA vetoed the name, as they thought that they might later use the name 'European Cup' for a tournament involved national sides. I feel that the intro should be amended to make clear that the real name of the competition was Champion Clubs' Cup, that is the only official title, but that both Champions Cup and European Cup were used as alternate names, with European Cup being the best known. If there are no objections, I'll make the change in a couple of days. However if anyone objects or believes they have evidence that I'm in error, then feel free to disagree. [edit] Monaco Flag
Shouldnt the Monaco team have a French Flag? They play in the French League after all. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 80.42.32.106 (talk) 05:31, 1 May 2007 (UTC).
No because monaco is a seperate state to france, they only play in the french league because monaco has one team. 81.134.191.4 13:06, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- Monaco has many more than just one football club, they have a league competition with many teams [6], AS Monaco FC compete in the French league because they choose to play in the French league. (which may be because the Monaco FA isn't affilated to FIFA or UEFA) —This is part of a comment by MTC , which got interrupted by the following:
- I find this offensive. AS Monaco were founded and still play inside Monaco... it's a seperate nation, it's not France. "Well they play in the French league." Yeah and Cardiff City F.C., Swansea City F.C., Wrexham A.F.C., are all proudly Welsh clubs of course, yet they compete in the English leagues. Does anyone even attempt to put an English flag next to those clubs? No. Not even the English. Because it doesn't make sense. So why should Monaco be any different? I'm changing it back and putting a footnote saying they play in the French leagues. - Tocino 19:21, 30 May 2007
- Apart from UEFA competitions where the Welsh clubs qualified via the Welsh Cup (and so the Welsh flag is correctly placed), where is there a Welsh flag for one of those? If there is an article like that, it needs fixing. - MTC 19:34, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
- Unfortunately none of the Welsh clubs who've competed in the English leagues have qualified for Europe. But if they did I guarentee you they would be playing under the Welsh flag as the clubs and the supporters would be offended if an English flag was in their place. England and Wales aren't even technically real nations anyways - so should they all have British flags next the the clubs? Also this isn't an exclusive situtation. FC Vaduz are considered a Liechtensteiner club despite playing in the Swiss leagues. - Tocino 19:51, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
- FC Vaduz have only ever qualified for UEFA competitions through the Liechtenstein football Cup, which is why they are considered a Liechtensteiner club.
- I would consider AS Monaco to be in a similar situation to Derry City F.C., who are always given a Republic of Ireland flag because they qualify for Europe through the League of Ireland as opposed to Northern Ireland where they are located, giving AS Monaco a Monaco flag is the same as giving Derry a Northern Ireland flag, or are you now going change all those? If Cardiff City quailfied for Europe through an English competition then I for one would add an English flag by their name, though no doubt it would be changed by someone like you…—This is part of a comment by MTC , which got interrupted by the following:
- Someone like me? Stop with the backhanded insults. There's a problem with the Derry City comparison. Derry City consider themselves a club of the Republic of Ireland as they have predominately Catholic support. I'm changing it by what the clubs want. Monaco are a self described Monegasque football club. FC Vadaz are a self described Liechtensteiner club. Cardiff City are a self described Welsh club. Why are these clubs different? Because they play in different countries. The league they play in doesn't make the club or change its identity. And the only language I speak is English or else I would change it to what it correctly belongs in all the languages. - Tocino 22:06, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
- Why do you insist on spiltting up my comments… Right, I can't be bothered to argue with you any more, I still think it's wrong but I don't want to get into an edit war. Just be sure to change all the season articles, if you're going to insist on giving them a Monaco flag here you should be consistant in all the others, will take you a while though. - MTC 05:25, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
- One last thing; shouldn't you be arguing to do this on the French article too? - MTC 20:10, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
- Tocino 19:21, 30 May 2007
- I think AS Monaco FC should have a French flag in this article as they have always qualified for the UEFA Champions League through the French league. - MTC 13:27, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
MTC is correct, they hold the flag of the league they qualify through, as they represent that countries league. Chaza93 20:47, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
- Why not put both? --AW 20:35, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

- I also agree with MTC. AS Monaco plays in the French competition, they qualified through the French competition so the flag should be French. 193.190.253.148 22:35, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Note that as per the UEFA website itself , ASM is always accompanied buy the French flag. http://www.uefa.com/footballeurope/club=50023/domestic.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.234.76.110 (talk) 00:23, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] TV Broadcasters
I was thinking, perhaps it would be a great addition to have a wiki detailing the broadcasters of the competition in every country worldwide, in much the same way that there is a similiar page for F1 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_broadcasters Htb50 23:08, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] History section
The discussion of the name and format changes is incorrect, or at least worded very poorly. The name change to "Champions League" occurred in 1992-93, but the expansion to include runners-up was not until the 1997-98 season. And while I'm at it, UEFA is misspelled as "EUFA" in the second paragraph of the article.
[edit] Spanish Flag
Why the flag shown for the Spanish teams pre-1975 is that one? If you want to reflect the Franco's regime flag, the shield should be centered, not to the left like in the current one. And well, I would directly remove that flag anyway... but true, that was the official one at the time. (Vbroto 04:07, 24 May 2007 (UTC))
[edit] Monaco 2008
The article contradicts itself by stating Monaco will host next year's final, yet in the list of finals, it says it will be in Moscow. Anyone know which is correct? Sʟυмgυм • т • c 12:29, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
- Its Moscow, Luzhniki Stadium to be precise. Stade Louis II is far too small to host a major final. Oldelpaso 12:44, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Champion's league = C1 ?
In french, journalists sometimes refer at Champion's league as C1 in opposition with C2 (defunct) and C3 (Uefa cup). For example: [7].
I couldn't find any reference at C1, C2, C3 with theses meanings in english does it exist or not ? --Mrpouetpouet 21:37, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] German flag
What happened to the German flag? It isn't working on the UEFA Cup article either. Why is it the only flag that doesn't show up now? - Tocino 19:00, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] European Cup article
theEuropean Cup should be disambiguation page for all European team sports, not just football redirection for UEFA champions league. --ArnoldPettybone 19:17, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
- No it shouldn't. 99% of people when they see or hear "European Cup" they think of the football competition. Should Pele go to a disambiguation page too? There's plenty of other people named Pele. - Tocino 19:39, 4 June (UTC)
- It would be a little unfair to claim that the UEFA Champions League is the only European Cup worth listing in these pages. A search for 'European Cup' on Google shows that of the top 20 results, only 8 refer to the present UCL, the rest refer to competitions in athletics (2), rugby (2), go (2), floorball, handball, motorcycle racing, car racing and race walking, and the last is a movie about football (Soccer Dog: European Cup). Surely this is testament to the abundance of other competitions called the 'European Cup', if nothing else. Further, the Champions League only inherits the storied history of the old European Cup but is quite a different beast. I suppose if football's European Cup were to be given its own page, it should bear only historical content, and a link to the UCL page.Icedwater (talk) 16:47, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] AS Monaco FC having a Monegasque flag with the French?
Hello. I was curious as to what you all thought in regards to AS Monaco FC having a French flag attached and not a Monegasque flag. I understand that the team plays within Ligue 1 which is French. But could it be fair to also put Monaco's flag next to the French one since the team is from Monaco playing in the French league? Just a thought. I understand having two flags would cause confusion even if the team isn't French.
Thanks. Mike Moresi 08:09, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- There was a long discussion about it at #Monaco Flag, a little way up the page.
- I still don't understand why people want to put a Monaco flag there when the flags should obviously be the flag of the league they play in, not the area they are located in. - MTC 08:36, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] UCL - ECL
Why is it in club articles the UEFA Champions League is referred to with the initials ECL? What does the 'E' in ECL stand for, European? Shouldn't it be 'U' for UEFA, hence UCL?
[edit] Irrelevant info?
Does anyone else think that the information in the box on the upper right of this page, that says where the 2008 final will be held and the television broadcasters, is irrelevant? Imo the info does not belong there —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.204.152.83 (talk • contribs).
[edit] Premiums
The amount of money a club gets is being determined by several factors. One of these factors is the result, another even bigger factor seems to be the size of the country which the club 'represents'. Last year when Arsenal played against PSV Eindhoven, PSV won both matches. Despite of that Arsenal still got 3 times as much money for those 2 matches as PSV Eindhoven. Can someone put some more info in this article about the formula which describes how much money a club gets for each Champions league match? I would also find it interesting to know the reasons why a club from a bigger country automatically gets more money. After all, it takes two to tango. Without the opponent from the smaller country there wouldn't be a match at all. Both clubs need to put in as much effort and costs, so why not a 50/50 split of the premium when a match ends in a tie?

[edit] New succession box on final pages
I suggest there be a succession box on the final pages which regards the host cities.
For example the page for Moscow 2008 would have Athens preceding and Rome succeeding.
I've attempted to create this and have put it on the 2009 page, but I may not have done it perfectly.

I've put it on the 2008 page as well.

[edit] Current tables
So there shouldn't be current tables of league standings? I though that would be a nice addition to the page... (Whocantucan (talk) 18:26, 27 November 2007 (UTC))
- The current tables are on the current season page: UEFA Champions League 2007-08. There is no reason to put them on this page as well. I said this in my edit summary when I reverted your addition. - MTC (talk) 18:35, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, I'm sorry. I didn't realize. Thanks :/ (Whocantucan (talk) 01:21, 28 November 2007 (UTC))
[edit] Image Overlap
In the "Record and Statistics" section an image of Europe overlaps the table that shows club wins. I dont know how to fix it. 74.225.72.240 (talk) 20:12, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Title holder?
I believe that milan are still the title holders until the trophy is presented to an english team, so removing the name AC Milan and the flag of italy from the title holder spot, is not valid until either Man U or Chelsea actually wins the trophy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.234.76.110 (talk) 00:30, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] MAN UTD .VS. CHELSEA
Well everyone knew that this was going to be a champions league final to remember, and it was! It delivered with some memorable pieces of skill from 2 sides that in todays football calendar, would be teams that you want to see play. The likes of christiano ronaldo shone on the night with his epic array of skills, and also opening the scoring with a beautifully timed header on the ball. Even though in the penalty shootout he managed to miss his penalty, his performance during the game, meant that the penalty didnt really matter, although this might not have been the case if they lost in the penalty shootout. On a whole it was a champions league final that will definetly be recorded in the record books and will be remembered for a while yet.
The winning line up :
MAN UTD :
- edwin van der sar
- wes brown
- nemanja vidic
- rio ferdinand
- patrice evra
- christiano ronaldo
- micheal carrick
- paul scholes
- owen hargreaves
- tevez
- wayne rooney
[edit] Other Champions Leagues
Shouldn't there be more about the sucsess and popularity of the tournament round the world since the rebranding in the early 1990s, and how many different competitions around the world have copied the Champions League name in homage. Lord Cornwallis (talk) 19:17, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Error in Image:UEFA_members_at_group_stage_in_the_Champions_League.svg
The map showing countries that have teams which have reached the group stages of the Champions League is wrong. According to the map, a Scottish team has never reached the group stages, which is clearly not true; Rangers and/or Celtic are there almost every year.
I suggest that the map be removed until someone provides an accurate version. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.8.162.165 (talk) 16:31, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Opening section The Double and The Treble
I don't think this paragraph is at all necessary for the article certainly not in the opening section and is hardly a NPOV concerning the relative strengths of the domestic Leagues. (Statto999 (talk) 22:20, 31 May 2008 (UTC))
- Text as follows "The Double" and "The Treble" are terms used for the achivement of winning more than one title in one season.
Many teams have achieved winning both the Champions League and their domestic title, Manchester United being the latest in 2008. This is called the European Double. Winning both the national league, the domestic (main) cup and the Champions League, is called The European Treble, and is perhaps the greatest a club can achieve in a single season. Only five teams have ever achieved the great glory of winning The European Treble, Celtic (1967), Ajax (1972), PSV Eindhoven (1988) and Manchester United (1999). Manchester United’s treble win, is by many considered the biggest, because of the English Premier League being a greater competition than the Dutch or the Scottish. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Statto999 (talk • contribs) 22:23, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
