Udono clan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Udono clan (鵜殿氏 Utono-shi?) was a family directly descended from Fujiwara Sanekata--a man highly reputed for his political letter writing during the Heian period--coming into existence by the early years of Feudal Japan's Sengoku period. Residing within Tōtōmi Province throughout the time of their birth to their death, the Udono were related by the presently powerful Imagawa clan by blood, and thus willingly represented the former's power by offering many retainers of note, such as that of Udono Nagateru, nephew of the Imagawa's ruling head -- Yoshimoto. By the year 1560, Yoshimoto advanced upon Owari Province for the sake of an eventual expansion upon the capital, which then led to the Battle of Okehazama: an event that was seen as most opportune for the Udono's future prestige, and they thus supported their lord with great willingness. To their ill-fortune, however, the capable Oda Nobunaga desolated Yoshimoto in a display of opportunistic tactics, thus tearing apart the Udono's chance to rise to any level of power, and throwing them into a state of great decline that they were unable to recover from. In addition to their detriment, the future Tokugawa Ieyasu used the two sons of Nagateru to effectively free his hostage family from the grasp of Yoshimoto's successor, Ujizane in 1562, destroying any remaining opportunity for the Udono to even expand their heirship, and they thus either died off or lived on in un-notable seclusion for the sake of survival.
