UCSD Price Center

For the student and faculty community of the University of California, San Diego (commonly referred to as UCSD or UC San Diego), the main hub is the UCSD Price Center located in the center of campus, just south of Geisel Library. The Price Center offers a variety of services, places, and spaces geared to the needs of students including restaurants, the central bookstore, movie theater, and various student organizations.

The UCSD Price Center opened in 1993 as a replacement to the smaller Student Center (now referred to as the Old Student Center).

[edit] Price Center "East" Expansion

In the Spring of 2003 a Student Referendum was passed to expand the Price Center to nearly double the original size for the start of the 2008 academic year. The students agreed to tax themselves $39 per quarter to pay for the expansion, which costs about $64 million[1]. The student "tax" gathered roughly $46 million dollars for the expansion, with the remainder coming from various campus accounts.

The expansion would include:

  • 24-hour study lounge with a computer lab, group-study rooms, and commuter student resources (including lockers, commuter kitchen, etc.)
  • Late-night restaurants and cafes including a restaurant connected to a 24-hour study lounge
  • More diverse food offerings including healthy low-cost places to eat
  • Additional indoor and outdoor dining seating
  • Sunshine Market Grocery store in the Price Center
  • Expanded General Store at the Student Center
  • Convenient retail services (such as a full-service bank, hair stylist, etc.)
  • Expansion of Soft Reserves and Lecture Notes
  • Expanded full-service post office
  • 84 additional student organization offices and a student organization resource center
  • Renovation of student organization offices at the Student Center
  • Additional student event and programming space
  • More social lounge spaces
  • Face lift to the exterior of the Student Center including more and improved lighting
  • Student-run Recruitment & Retention Center
