UCLA Community Service Officer Programs (CSO Programs) is a student-run Community Service Officer organization at the University of California, Los Angeles. Part of the University of California Police Department (UCPD), UCLA CSOs are best known for providing escorts from dusk to 1:00AM (365 days per year). In addition to escorts, CSOs patrol residence halls, parking structures/lots, 8 campus libraries and operate the Evening Van Service.

[edit] History

At its inception in 1977, the program consisted of seven volunteers who provided a nighttime escort service.

[edit] Membership and Training

Membership is composed entirely of UCLA students and is open to full-time UCLA students who have a minimum of one year left in school and at least a 2.0 GPA. Applications are accepted year-round. Training usually takes approximately two weeks, and includes both field and classroom training. Training concludes with a final exam, which tests CSO policies, police codes and geography.

[edit] Operational Policies

  • Non-intervention - CSOs are neither asked nor expected to perform as police officers, but are expected only to observe and report. Physical intervention should not be used unless absolutely necessary.
  • Incident reports - Any incident to which police, fire, medical, and/or emergency personnel respond must be documented in an incident report by the CSO involved. The incident report is reviewed by a CSO supervisor and manager before submission into police records.

[edit] Organization

CSO Programs is a bureau of the Police Support Services section of the UCLA Police Department, along with Dispatch and Property. It consists of two managers, approximately ten supervisors (field escort, residence hall, van, and administrative supervisors), and about 65 other units.
Organizational Structure

  • Chief of Police
  • Captain of Support Services
  • CSO Manager
  • CSO Supervisor
  • Field Training Officer (FTO)
  • Bicycle Patrol Unit, Dispatcher, Van Unit
  • Community Service Officer

[edit] Recent News

  • Because of the many requests for the UCLA CSO Programs to extend its escort service to a later time, the CSO escort will operate one hour later on Thursdays beginning Spring 2008. This brings the operational time from dusk to 2:00AM.
  • The Daily Bruin published an article in Winter 2008 that stated the Evening Van Service might provide late-night service between the fraternity row and sorority row on Thursdays. The late-night service has not been initiated at this point in time.
