[edit] Summary
The current UCLA athletics logo. The rules governing the appearance, presentation, and construction of this logo were set in the UCLA Graphic Standards Manual on September 8, 2004. The constituents of the "Graphic Identity Program" maintain strict rules covering how, where, when, and in what manner the logo is to be constructed and presented. The logo, instated in 2004, is part of the program that UCLA is using in order to create and maintain a visual identity in the wave of inconsistent icons and logotypes representing the university.
The logo cannot be reconstructed with any fonts or drawings. It is available by restricted download on their Identity site, and only that version may ever be used as the official logo.
[edit] Licensing
This is a logo of an organization, item, or event, and is protected by copyright and/or trademark. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, of logos for certain uses involving identification and critical commentary may qualify as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. Certain commercial use of this image may also be trademark infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content and Wikipedia:Logos.
This tag must have an accompanying fair use rationale which must be unique to the usage of THIS image in each article in which it is used. You must also give the source and copyright information for all fair-use images uploaded. Use of the logo here does not imply endorsement of the organization by Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation, nor vice versa. |
[edit] Fair Use Rationale
This logo is not free use. The university sets strict guidelines on its logo, and covering its Fair Use in Wikipedia's article on UCLA is this rationale.
This logo qualifies as fair use under Wikipedia's copyright guidelines on logos as follows:
- Under United States law, this logo, a trademark of UCLA, may be used on other sites for purposes of criticism and commentary. The Wikipedia article serves to do just that. Furthermore, the trademark may not be used in an artistic or editorial setting. Its presence in the infobox in the UCLA article is neither artistic or editorial.
- There is no free equivalent, because one cannot be produced, according to the Graphics Manual. The only allowable logograph is this logo, and any reproduction, digital or otherwise does not represent the university.
- In no way does this inhibit trademark policies set forth by UCLA. It cannot and will not be used to sell merchandise or propagate advertisement.
- It is the highest resolution of the official logo available to the public. It is the only university logo published in UCLA media.
Additionally, because this is the athletics logo, fair use only covers articles that need this logo to identify UCLA's athletic program. This logo may only be used in articles that explicitly follow this need.
