[edit] Hi
I'm from Uckfield, and I was wondering if there is anyone else who is reading this as well? Please reply if you are.
Hi, I'm from Uckfield too, so at least one other person has read the article!
Hello! I'm writing from St. Joseph, Michigan, USA. Our local community theatre, Twin City Players (www.twincityplayers.com) is currently producing the play Present Laughter written by Noel Coward in 1943. One of its characters is Roland Maule, a slightly daffy playwright from Uckfield. Just wondering if there's anybody in town by that name. If so, feel free to e-mail Steve at billygoat@birchwoodbeach.com.
[edit] ooh
I'm from Uckfield too!! What sort of stuff needs to go on here to upgrade it from a stub?? What sort of stuff should I write? [[Initial ideas are:]]
Some descriptive stuff ie. Uckfield has a central high street where 90% of it's retail facilities lie. There are 2 main supermarkets and a large variety of other shops including many estate agents & charity shops. Towards one end of town is Uckfield's industrial estate, home to some very small companies, through to some of those like OWL video systems who do millions of £'s of turnover a year.
Some description of groups: Young One's, Town Council, Churches, Cubs/Scouts/Guides, International Animal Rescue,
Schools Holy X, Rocks Park, Manor, UCTC,
That all sounds good! Also maybe that Friday-Ad and Piece of Cake started here, the floods in 2000, the Uckfield Festival...
[edit] Statistics
Perhaps the The population of Uckfield in ... was ... etc could be moved to a separate statistics section, rather than being in prose in the main text? Zaettar 09:30, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] More suggestions.
I live nearby. These are just some items I am aware of, but the facts need researching.
- The Uckfield bypass. It made a big difference, any statistics. Was there a Uckfield bypass campaign, why is it a single carriageway?
- Around ten years ago, the town was flooded. Details, pictures.

- I had some pictures of the 2000/2001 floods, but I've changed pcs twice since, so it'll take some digging to find them. Kelvingreen 22:50, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

- After the railway line was closed, and Uckfield became a terminus, the trains still had to cross the road (level crossing)to get into the station. I was told that it was like that for ages when someone had the idea of moving the station to the other side of the road, eliminating the crossing. I know the station was moved, but is it true that it was the result of sudden inspiration?

[edit] Ucca's Feld?
The origin of the town's name seems very certain; is it possible to see some sources linked/quoted? I only ask because I was under the impresson that no one really knew where the name came from. The theory I'd heard most commonly was of a Saxon lord called Ucca who'd set up a settlement ("feld") there. Kelvingreen 07:27, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
I agree. At primary school in the town in the 1970s we were always taught that the name meant "Oak in Field", and that the river was named after the town. Town crests featuring oak trees are based on this theory I believe.Mralph72 02:07, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] The army at Uckfield
My uncle was stationed at Uckfield when he was doing his national service in 1950. Is there an army base around here still? He was in the Intelligence Corps, but I don't know if that was after he left Uckfield and was posted elsewhere. 86.153.216.204 15:56, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
- I think that some of the Manor Park estate was once barracks (or at least that there were barracks up that end of town), but I can't be sure. Kelvingreen (talk) 11:01, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Rewrite: comments
This article [1], the Wikipedia notes on writing about settlements, suggests a certain layout. I have followed it as closely as I can: you will see that it helps a great deal in putting the right things in the right places and reminds an editor what can be included. The comments above often talk about about quite small matters IMO, which are not really necessary in an encyclopaedia article. I have also reduced the rail section: all the comments hitherto are all included in the Wealden Line article as well as the station one. The same thing applies to the history section: as long as the main things are included, a reader who wants to go further can look up the reference I have quoted.
I hope that any future editors can add more - there are plenty of gaps! Nothing about sport; or the industry in Uckfield to give just two examples. I know very little about the place, but have been able to Google quite a bit!!! Peter Shearan (talk) 16:17, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
