[edit] Difference?
What's the difference between ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing, and sentient computing? It appears that they are all the same thing to me. I think they should be merged. GJL
They mean different things. Read the ubicomp and sentient comp pages. Pervasive computing is also (if I remember right) an IBM term that means something else slightly different as well - anil
I've always read that pervasive an ubiquitous were synonyms. Ubiquitous is the more popular term. 71.244.190.133 05:32, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
- The following reference suggests that the emerging era of the invisible but pervasive computer is also known as ubiquitous computing:

[edit] Difference?
I believe that it is time to emphasis the difference between the two terms ubiquitous computing and pervasive computing. These words are often confused. Since Mark weiser coined the term ubiquitous computing, a lot of other terms have been proposed to say the same thing which it is tricky and make it difficult to focus on applications and usages. I think that the proposed classification based on interaction paradigms make it more comprehensible. Indeed, one should think differently to develop new applications that are really ubiquitous or parvasive. the idea is to focus on usages and iteractions rather than access issues only !. I agree with suggestion that Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing page be merged into ubiquitous computing page .comment added by 193.50.153.129 (talk) 12:52, 13 March 2008 (UTC) 193.50.153.129 (talk) 13:32, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Abbreviations
I believe that the most widely used abbreviation for ubiquitous computing is "ubicomp", not "ubiqcomp". I was able to find a few references to "ubiqcomp", though, so I left it in. Glogger, can you supply more references to the use of "ubiqcomp" as an abbreviation for ubiquitous computing?

[edit] Bill Griswold coining "ubiquitous computing"
I've never even heard of Bill Griswold - where is the evidence that he coined "ubiquitous computing"? I was under the impression that Weiser coined it in 1988 internally at PARC and then popularised it in 1991 in SciAm. I can't even find significant ubiquitous computing papers listed with him as a first author (a search for my name turns up more). Unless there's a cite I'm removing this information... Louie is king!

[edit] Removal of Long List of Research Institutions
I would like to remove most of the long list of research institutions. I think that a good "External Links" section with pointers to actual pages about UbiComp would be useful, and I won't make the edit until: a) I have such a list as a substitute, and b) some time passes here for people to suggest I'm full of it. But the long list of pointers to generic lab pages doesn't (IMHO) add to the quality of the page. -- Gnetwerker 07:25, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- Wouldn't the list of pointers to relevant research groups be useful for someone looking for some ubiquitous computing resources (eg application scenarios, publications, etc...)? If removing the list would help improve the quality of this article, what about having another list of page with an internal link to it?--Elias 09:57, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, having a List page is probably the right answer. -- Gnetwerker 16:34, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] peripherally noticeable
The term "peripherally noticeable" is annoying. Its either noticeable or its not noticeable. Anthony717 23:02, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- It means "noticeable in one's peripheral vision". Perhaps it should be re-phrased. Semifreddo (talk) 18:26, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
