[edit] WP:ADOPT

Hi there,

As a user looking to Adopt with the Adopt-a-User program, there has been some ongoing developments that we would like to bring to your attention, as well as request help with the backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

You should know that the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user on offering adoption please change the {{Adoptme}} template to {{Adoptoffer}} on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking. Once adoption is complete please use the templates found here on the Adoptee's and your user page.

Also numerous Adopters have been adding their details to a list of users available for adopting, to offer a more personalised service and allow new users to browse through and pick their own Adopter. The quickest way to adopt though, is still to contact users at the Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

Furthermore a new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you have and if you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.

So I hope you get adopting soon - and if you have any general questions or suggestions about the further development of Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User please bring them to our talk page. Cheers Lethaniol 15:25, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Question

I found a userpage that is completely blank, and wasn't even ever edited by the user who should have the page. In fact, I'm not even sure there is a user to have that page. The page is User:Sephiroth. Any help on what should be done greatly appreciated. Metakraid 02:15, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] You are back

Ahh!!! Where have you been Gray Porpoise? I was getting worried, hope everything is going okay and I hope that adminship is treating you well :). Cheers did I already tell you I got my name changed from Seadog.M.S? Arjun 20:13, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Doh. That is okay :). Well I have been busy on wikipedia, I have gotten over the 7,500 mark, I have been working on this list and also working on this this portal which I nominated for Featured portal :). So we will just have to see where that goes. Cheers! Arjun 20:25, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your user page

Hi, Gray Porpoise. Just a reminder that the format of your user page is being messed up by a picture of a porpoise blocking some of your userboxes at the top. Since I can't read through all of that code to make your user page look nice, I'm telling you right here. bibliomaniac15 03:55, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Admin coaching

Are you coaching Selmo right now? Did that ever get off the ground? Thanks, Fang Aili talk 22:04, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

That's fine. I was just wondering because in case you were free I might try to match you up with a new student. There's a line and I'd like to match up people with available coaches. But.. whatever you're comfortable with. --Fang Aili talk 16:19, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Ok. Do you mind asking Selmo if he still wants a coach? --Fang Aili talk 20:12, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Admin coaching

Giving Esperana's MfD, I figured Admin Coaching was put on hatus. Anyway, I've read a lot of policies, but I haven't really done anything to show this - everyone thinks I don't know teem. I've went to places like AfD and RfC to try to demonstrate policy knowledge. Would you say this is enough? I'd also like to know what other points I'm missing. I'm planning to rum my next RfA in six months. Thanks, -- Selmo (talk) 22:21, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Another barnstar

Well, thank you. :) I'm never sure what to say, in these moments. I do what I can, and once I get into it, I find it's hard to walk away from pgkbot. :p Keep up the good work, yourself; the wiki isn't something anybody can make or maintain alone! Luna Santin 04:19, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Adminship

Hi Gray Porpoise it is nice to hear from you =). Thanks for your trust in me, however I was wanted to wait an extra month so the community will have more faith in me. User:Husond is going to nominate me on the 4th of January, so that is when I am going to go for it. Cheers and thanks again, I find it ironic that I nominated you since you where the wikipedian who taught me practically everything I know. :), cheers my friend. ~ Arjun 18:34, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Help over at CAT:CSD

Hi, and congrats on your promotion! Per this discussion, I'm dropping a friendly note to some of the recently-promoted admins requesting help with speedy deletions. I am not an administrator, so if you don't feel comfortable diving into deletions - or if you need more info - please don't come to me, but I'm sure that Cyde Weys would be happy to guide you if you want to help. Any help is great, but I'm sure that Cyde and others would deeply appreciate it if you could put the page on your watchlist and do a bit of work there on a regular basis? Maybe weekly? Thanks in advance! Oh and if you're already working away on CSD please disregard this message; it's not meant as a slight against any hard work you're already doing. Cheers! [edit] Redirect of Barbados Rocks

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Barbados Rocks, by Mschel, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Barbados Rocks is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Barbados Rocks, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Barbados Rocks itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 00:16, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ms.wikipedia.org

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Ms.wikipedia.org, by 70.51.11.252 (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Ms.wikipedia.org fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

Administrative - redirect to deleted article

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Ms.wikipedia.org, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 04:37, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Portal: Cetaceans

Since it is only really us two that maintain the cetaceans portal i thought i would ask you this. I am getting more busy these days and have less time to maintain the portal so i was thinking of switching it to using a system more like that of Portal: Science or Portal: Marine life whereby the selected items are chosen randomly, rather than monthly, what do you think? Chris_huhtalk 11:07, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of User hate Nicktoon Network

A tag has been placed on User hate Nicktoon Network, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] AfD nomination of Ahmed Faseeh

An editor has nominated Ahmed Faseeh, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ahmed Faseeh and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 14:18, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Research Questions

Thank you for taking the time for this interview.

Do you feel that the general opinion of Wikipedia in the academic community is more positive, or negative?

To the extent of my knowledge, many members of the academic community regard Wikipedia in a positive manner.

Why do you think this perception exists?

People find Wikipedia to be a fast, easy source of information, although they do acknowledge that it may not be perfectly accurate.

How accurate do you think the information in Wikipedia is compared to other encyclopedias?

The same as other encyclopedias on average, but quite variable: Since Wikipedia is run by the people, articles of interest to the general public will probably be the most reliable.

How wide and comprehensive is the scope of Wikipedia compared to print media sources?

By the standards of encyclopedias, the scope of Wikipedia is colossal and still growing. When you have thousands of contributors from different backgrounds, you are bound to end up with information that no other encyclopedia has.

As an administrator, what flaws do you see in Wikipedia?

Unfortunately, a consequence of having so many contributors is that there is a good chance that many of them are not familiar with the policies and guidelines. Therefore, unreferenced or poorly written statements lurk in every corner.

Of these flaws, which do you think are fixable, and which are inherent in the system?

The wonderful thing about a wiki is that everything can be fixed. The process of correcting newcomer errors usually involves the placing of templates by individuals who notice the mistakes, which flag the article as needing attention. The disadvantage to templates is that they look unappealing to readers; the advantage is that they warn of the error.

Have you ever taken information on Wikipedia to be fact, and then later realize that it was in fact wrong? Has this happened to people you know?

Learning false information from Wikipedia is nearly inevitable, but it doesn't happen often.

How quickly is false information generally dectected and corrected?

An editor reads through the article inconspicuously, but suddenly encounters a statement that either contradicts what they have heard before or is attributed to a reliable source. They look it up and confirm their suspicion that it is wrong, and fix it.

How do you feel that Wikipedia deserves to be treated among students and teachers? e.g. Would you find it illogical for a teacher to say “Wikipedia is bad; don’t use it.”?

If someone condems Wikipedia because of its potential inaccuracy, then they suggest that the entire Internet, even secondary sources in general, should be shunned. The encyclopedia contains a gateway to knowledge; students just need to have the wisdom to use it properly.

Finally, is there anything else you’d like to say on the subject? Any closing thoughts you’d want to express to the public at large?

It is human nature to err, and The Free Encyclopedia is no exception. Nevertheless, a cautious reader can find limitless information contained within the wiki. Falacious information is added regularly, and can be seen on almost every given list of recent edits, but it vanishes as quickly as it is published, and for every instance of vandalism, there are several more beneficial or good-natured modifications. As the project progresses, we are doing our best to ensure that only the improvements survive. Remember, Wikipedia can be the ultimate source for facts if you browse carefully.

Again, thank you for your time.

[edit] Thanks!!

Thanks a ton for doing this! If I knew how to give you some kind of kooky award on your userpage, I would ;) Goat77 (talk) 18:08, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
