U Thant Peace Award

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The U Thant Peace Award was created by Sri Chinmoy, after U Thant's death. First offered in 1982, the award is given to individuals and organizations who have exemplified the lofty spiritual ideals of the late United Nations Secretary-General U Thant and implemented those ideals in the tireless pursuit of world peace.

It has not much connection with U Thant himself, none with the United Nations and was a means for Chinmoy Kumar Ghose to put himself forward on various events and meet famous people.

[edit] Recipients

It had been bestowed by Sri Chinmoy upon Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and Dada J.P. Vaswani.
