[edit] Origin and recording

The song was written by frontman Eddie Vedder and was originally recorded during the sessions for Pearl Jam's fifth album, Yield. According to Eddie Vedder in the liner notes for Lost Dogs, the song was written in a car on a twelve minute drive. He added that "had the trip been any longer I'm sure the song would have been more complex."[1]

The song was also included on the B-sides and rarities compilation, Lost Dogs. However, this version is different from the b-side. The original version featured Jack Irons on drums while this version features Matt Cameron.[1] Also, the vocals have been re-recorded.

[edit] Reception

In Allmusic's review of the "Wishlist" single, it was stated that "U" "achieves power pop magnificence with an insanely catchy melody and a late-blooming, funky instrumental breakdown."[2]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

When introducing the song at Pearl Jam's November 25, 2006 concert in Perth, Australia, Vedder said, "this is about selfish people, one in particular."[3]

[edit] Live performances

The song was premiered live at the band's October 11, 2000 concert in Maryland Heights, Missouri.[4] According to bassist Jeff Ament, the band had to go to Napster to download the song in order to remember how to play it as they couldn't find a single for "Wishlist" nearby.[5]
