U.S. Route 62 Business is a business route of U.S. Route 62 located mostly within the city of Niagara Falls, New York. The route, formerly designated New York State Route 62A, runs east-west along Pine Avenue through downtown Niagara Falls, spanning 2.12 miles (3.41 km) between New York State Route 104 at its western terminus and US 62 at its eastern extent. It runs in a mostly east-west direction even though it is signed as a north-south route because U.S. Route 62 is signed as a north-south route in New York State.
The vast majority of maps, and even city guide signs installed by the city of Niagara Falls, erroneously sign the route as US 62A.[2][3] The route carried US 62 until the early 1980s when US 62 was rerouted onto its present alignment between NY 104 and Pine Avenue. Pine Avenue was then re-designated as NY 62A. In 2006, the road was redesignated as US 62 Business by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials at the request of the New York State Department of Transportation and the city of Niagara Falls.[4]
[edit] Route description
Unlike the two streets that carry US 62 to the south, US 62 Business is a two-way street, the first such east-west street accessible from NY 104 heading north from the Rainbow Bridge. Heading east from the intersection of Main Street (NY 104) and Pine Street (US 62 Business), US 62 Business passes through a largely residential neighborhood, crossing Portage Road, a local north-south arterial, before intersecting New York State Route 61, Hyde Park Blvd., at the southwest tip of Hyde Park. US 62 Business makes up the southern border of the park, which runs along the route to its eastern terminus at US 62 on the eastern edge of downtown Niagara Falls.
