[edit] Route description

The western terminus of former BUS US 41 is the west end of Washington Street. Washington Street is four lanes, divided by a center median before a center turn lane replaces the median. Washington narrows to one lane in each direction at Lincoln Avenue and the turn lane is dropped by Seventh Street. At Front Street, BUS US 41 turned south one block away from Lake Superior. BUS US 41 ended where US 41 turns south along Front Street at the east end of the Marquette Bypass.

[edit] History

It was turned back to local control in a "route swap" between the city of Marquette and the Michigan Department of Transportation on 2005-10-10. MDOT relinquished jurisdiction over BUS US 41 and the unsigned M-554 to the City in exchange for jurisdiction over a section of McClellan Ave used to extend M-553. As a result, BUS US 41 was deleted when the City took control over Washington and Front streets.

It was originally a portion of US 41/M-28 before the construction of the Marquette Bypass in the 1960s. It was also previously co-designated BUS M-28, mirroring the US 41A/M-28A designations along BUS M-28 in Ishpeming and Negaunee.[1]
