Scenic US-412 is one of only two such bannered highways in the country, the other being U.S. Route 40 Scenic in Maryland. It serves as an alternate, free highway in eastern Oklahoma while U.S. Highway 412 is routed down the toll Cherokee Turnpike. It begins about twelve miles west of West Siloam Springs and ends about seven miles east of Chouteau. Maps usually mark the road as "Alternate 412", but the road is actually marked "Scenic 412". Prior to US designation, this segment was part of State Highway 33.
