In the U.S. state of New Jersey, U.S. Route 322 is designated from the Commodore Barry Bridge at the Delaware River to U.S. Route 40 in Hamilton Township. It is 50.20 miles (80.79 km) long between those two points.

Historically, the majority of the road (known as Black Horse Pike) was designated Route 42.[3] Furthermore, the section between US 130 and Route 42 was designated Route 51.[2] Then, in 1953, New Jersey renumbered all of its state highways, which resulted in Route 51 being deleted and Route 42 being truncated to Williamstown.[4]

An average of 10,615 vehicles use the road annually in Gloucester County, with an AADT of 6,910 in Atlantic County.[5]

[edit] Route description

[edit] Gloucester County

[edit] Delaware River to Williamstown

The New Jersey portion of US 322 begins in the middle of the Delaware River on the Commodore Barry Bridge. This is also the western terminus of County Route 536, which is concurrent with US 322 to Williamstown.[6] Immediately after exiting the bridge, there are close interchanges with U.S. Route 130 and Interstate 295.[7] Then, it has an intersection with Kings Highway[1] and has an access road to the New Jersey Turnpike.[8]

US 322 starts to curve southeast, then enters Mullica Hill, where it forms a short concurrency with Route 45.[9] After that, it heads east and passes through Richwood and has interchanges with Route 55 before entering Glassboro.[10] In Glassboro, it bisects the campus of Rowan University and forms a short concurrency with Route 47.[11]

After exiting Glassboro, US 322 becomes a two-lane surface road,[1] intersecting with North Tuckahoe Road on its way to Williamstown.[12] Entering Williamstown, US 322 turns north, while the aforementioned County Route 536 turns southeast on Main Street. Then, US 322 intersects Route 42 (Black Horse Pike) and turns east onto it. The road before turning onto Black Horse Pike becomes County Route 536 Spur. Soon after turning onto Black Horse Pike, it intersects County Route 536, this time not having a concurrency.[1]

[edit] Williamstown to Atlantic County

Other than an intersection with County Route 538, US 322 does not have any more junctions with numbered highways until it enters Folsom, where it intersects Route 54.[13]

[edit] Atlantic County

Entering Atlantic County, US 322 becomes a divided highway with jughandles. The first highway that US 322 intersects is Route 54. Soon after, it meets the southern terminus of Route 73.[14][1] After that, US 322 encounters a traffic circle with Weymouth Road as the intersecting road.[15][2] US 322 then continues east towards Atlantic City, with a substantial gap between this and the next junction.

The next junction is an interchange with Route 50.[16] A short while after, US 322 intersects U.S. Route 40, which merges onto the Black Horse Pike.[17] The two routes then continue to Atlantic City.[3]

[edit] Before 1953

From 1936 to 1953, the portion between the Delaware River and former Route 44 was also designated Route S44 in addition to US 322.[18] Continuing eastward, the portion between former Route 44 and current Route 42 was Route 51, concurrent with US 322.[19] It is also this section that was not in state highway jurisdiction at the time.[2] US 322 then used former Route 48/US 40 to Atlantic City.[20]

[edit] 1953 to present

The year of 1953 sees the 1953 state highway renumbering, in which many concurrencies were removed from the state highway system. The entirety of Route 51 was deleted, Route 42 was truncated to Williamstown, Route 48 was truncated to Carneys Point, and parts of Route 44 (including the part where US 322 intersected it) was replaced by US 130.[4] It also sees the elimination of all prefixed and suffixed state routes, such as Route S44.[21]

The aforementioned section of US 322 between former Route 44 and current Route 42 became state highway jurisdiction in 1955 after a state takeover.[2] Then, in 1974, the Commodore Barry Bridge opened, rerouting US 322 to the location of the new bridge approach. The former piece of US 322 to the Delaware River became Route 324.

[edit] Footnotes

  1. ^  Google Maps shows NJ 73 as County Route 561; this is incorrect as CR 561 does not enter Folsom. The US 322 Straight Line Diagram shows the correct routes.
  2. ^  Reference to Google shown is a satellite picture/map, which shows a traffic circle-like intersection. The Straight Line Diagram also indicates a traffic signal.
  3. ^  Although the Straight Line Diagram ends at US 40, it mentions "MP 50.20-62.66 See US 40 MP 51.71-64.27", meaning that US 322 is concurrent with US 40 all the way to Atlantic City.
