U.S. Route 220 in Maryland is a highway that serves as the primary connecting route between Cumberland and Keyser, West Virginia. US 220 crosses over the Potomac River into Allegany County, Maryland between Keyser, West Virginia and McCoole. It intersects Maryland Route 135 after crossing the river, and then travels northeast, paralleling the Potomac River. US 220 intersects Maryland Route 53 in Cresaptown. It then joins Interstate 68 through Cumberland. After leaving Interstate 68, it passes into Bedford County, Pennsylvania north of Cumberland. The entire length of the route in Maryland is in Allegany County.

South of Interstate 68, U.S. Route 220 is known as McMullen Highway, and on Interstate 68, the road is called National Freeway.

[edit] Route Description

U.S. Route 220 crosses the North Branch Potomac River from Keyser, West Virginia, into McCoole. In McCoole, US 220 intersects with the eastern terminus of Maryland Route 135. The road travels northeast from McCoole, paralleling the Potomac River across southern Allegany County. Near Bel Air, Route 220 intersects with Maryland Route 956, a short connector route which goes to a bridge across the Potomac into West Virginia. In Cresaptown, US 220 intersects with Maryland Route 53. The road continues northeast through Potomac Park, before joining Interstate 68 at Exit 42 in Cumberland. Route 220 then follows Interstate 68 through Cumberland, with interchanges providing access to West Virginia Route 28 Alternate, Maryland Route 51, and U.S. Route 40 Alternate. US 220 leaves Interstate 68 at Exit 46, continuing northward to the Mason-Dixon line, where it crosses into Pennsylvania.

Due to a very steep ramp on Exit 42, where US 220 meets Interstate 68, Truck U.S. 220 is designated as a bypass to the ramp. Truck U.S. 220 exits from Interstate 68 at Exit 40 in LaVale, traveling southbound on Maryland Route 658 and Maryland Route 53 to Cresaptown, where it intersects with US 220.

[edit] History

U.S. Route 220 has been realigned several times, resulting in several old sections of the road being separated from US 220. When U.S. Route 48 (later Interstate 68) was constructed through Cumberland, US 220 was realigned onto the new road. Previously it had run on Greene Street and Bedford Street in Cumberland. North of Cumberland, a newly realigned section of US 220 was opened in 2000. The road that US 220 had previously used, known as Bedford Road, became Maryland Route 807.

[edit] Future work

Expansion of U.S. Route 220 is planned between Interstate 68 in Cumberland and Corridor H near Scherr, WV. This new highway is meant to alleviate traffic problems on U.S. Route 220 between Cumberland and Keyser, WV, and to provide better access to the new Corridor H highway. Planning is being led by the West Virginia Department of Highways.[2] Five alternative locations for the new highway have been considered.[3]
